9:59 Quikkmix 15: 140 bpm Bass Music

I haven’t done a mini-mix in a few months so this is long overdue. These are just a few digital bits I picked up over the last few weeks. There’s really no genre umbrella we can file these under, so I think it’s safe enough to simply call it “bass music”. It’s all around 140 bpm, and last few songs fold a bit of amen and breakbeats into the mixture. Soundcloud and direct link below. Plain ol’ Serato this time around.

9:59 Quikmixx 14: 2003-2009 Tech House (Mixed in Ableton)

Just a quick ten-minute mix I busted out on my laptop while I was home visiting my parents over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A lot of the tracks on here have been sitting around on my hard drive for years, so don’t expect to hear a flavor-of-the-month mash-up session this time around. Many of these tracks are mixed as normal, while some of them I just extracted small loops or pads from and used these pieces by themselves as effects.

Very quick, off the cuff, baltimore club mix I just whipped up. All 2006-2008 joints, mainly by artists you probably recognize. Plenty of stabs, horns, riffs extracted from smooth R&B ballads, and so on for your listening pleasure.

9:59 Quikkmix 12: Chicago Juke/Ghettotech/Booty House

One section of this site I’ve practically abandoned (and that I really need to bring back to life) is the 9:59 Quikkmix section. Hoping to start doing more of these shortly however! I’ve personally been getting into a lot of Chicago juke styled stuff lately, which is essentially a revival of a lot of the older ghettotech and booty house stuff that cats like DJ Godfather, Slugo, and DJ Funk pioneered in the late 1990s. Although the sound hasn’t really changed much, that’s actually what I like about it, everything is simple, catchy and energetic!

This is just a one-off mix I recorded today with some recent bits I’ve downloaded…the mixing is a little rough but whatever. Most juke tracks are only about 2 minutes long (if even that) so it definitely keeps a DJ on his/her toes!

Chalk up another mix in the 9:59 section. This mix is a little random, as I pretty much took a few records that were in the front of my flight case and decided to grit my teeth and see how well (or poorly) they would work together, but at the end wasn’t quite as gash as I thought it would be!

9:59 Quikkmix 09: Deep Dubstep

OK I’ll be honest here- I have very limited experience playing dubstep but I think I did ok with this one. Every month I buy a couple dub-oriented tracks and with the rise of the genre over the past two years some of them are really tough to avoid since they’re so good! This ten minute mix focuses on some of the deeper tracks out there from the likes of Data, D1, and Martyn. Even though I have no ambitions whatsoever playing dubstep music outside of my bedroom, it’s still good practice playing different styles of music that I am less familiar with!

9:59 Quikmixx 07: Techno

Haven't had a chance to drop a 10-minute session on you recently, until now of course! The hard techno one I did back in 9:59 installment 02 has proven to be the most popular one so far, so here's another techno oriented one. I'm about 99.9% sure I will never have the opportunity to play records like this outside my bedroom considering the fact that many think tracks like these are too abrasive or dated, but they're a lot of fun to mix and I love the brutalist simplicity. Mostly turn-of-the-century stuff here, give or take a couple years. MP3 only right now, but will post youtube video soon!

PS- I'm working on Quikmixx 08 right now; it's going to be a tech house/minimal one mixed entirely in Ableton and will have bits and pieces of around 15-20 tracks altogether. I am about 2/3rds of the way done with it so far and am happy with the way it's coming out, so stay tuned.

Our next installment in the 9:59 Quikmixx series is tech house. Most of these are older familiar party tunes with a fair amount of energy; the selection is a little on the spontaneous side but nothing too over the top that would make someone want to choke me and say "what the hell were you thinking?!" 9:59 Quikkmixx 02: Hard Techno

For the second 9:59 installment I decided to put away the minimal techno and electro records and cd's aside and pull some of the most abrasive records in my collection that fall below the 150 bpm mark. The harder-edged techno sound that was made iconic by the likes of Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin during their dj sets in the late 90s. It was not uncommon to hear these DJ's play on 3 (or even more) turntables and blaze through 40-50 tunes in an hour. This Quikkmixx illustrates that style and I tried to start it out mellow and build it up- a tough feat for only 10 minutes! I think I pulled it off though.
