I haven’t done a mini-mix in a few months so this is long overdue. These are just a few digital bits I picked up over the last few weeks. There’s really no genre umbrella we can file these under, so I think it’s safe enough to simply call it “bass music”. Just a quick ten-minute mix I busted out on my laptop while I was home visiting my parents over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A lot of the tracks on here have been sitting around on my hard drive for years, so don’t expect to hear a flavor-of-the-month mash-up session this time around. Many of these tracks are mixed as normal, while some of them I just extracted small loops or pads from and used these pieces by themselves as effects.

One section of this site I’ve practically abandoned (and that I really need to bring back to life) is the 9:59 Quikkmix section. Hoping to start doing more of these shortly however! I’ve personally been getting into a lot of Chicago juke styled stuff lately, which is essentially a revival of a lot of the older ghettotech and booty house stuff that cats like DJ Godfather, Slugo, and DJ Funk pioneered in the late 1990s. Although the sound hasn’t really changed much, that’s actually what I like about it, everything is simple, catchy and energetic!

This is just a one-off mix I recorded today with some recent bits I’ve downloaded…the mixing is a little rough but whatever. Most juke tracks are only about 2 minutes long (if even that) so it definitely keeps a DJ on his/her toes!

OK I’ll be honest here- I have very limited experience playing dubstep but I think I did ok with this one. Every month I buy a couple dub-oriented tracks and with the rise of the genre over the past two years some of them are really tough to avoid since they’re so good! This ten minute mix focuses on some of the deeper tracks out there from the likes of Data, D1, and Martyn. Even though I have no ambitions whatsoever playing dubstep music outside of my bedroom, it’s still good practice playing different styles of music that I am less familiar with!

Haven't had a chance to drop a 10-minute session on you recently, until now of course! The hard techno one I did back in 9:59 installment 02 has proven to be the most popular one so far, so here's another techno oriented one. I'm about 99.9% sure I will never have the opportunity to play records like this outside my bedroom considering the fact that many think tracks like these are too abrasive or dated, but they're a lot of fun to mix and I love the brutalist simplicity. Mostly turn-of-the-century stuff here, give or take a couple years. MP3 only right now, but will post youtube video soon!

PS- I'm working on Quikmixx 08 right now; it's going to be a tech house/minimal one mixed entirely in Ableton and will have bits and pieces of around 15-20 tracks altogether. I am about 2/3rds of the way done with it so far and am happy with the way it's coming out, so stay tuned.

Our next installment in the 9:59 Quikmixx series is tech house. Most of these are older familiar party tunes with a fair amount of energy; the selection is a little on the spontaneous side but nothing too over the top that would make someone want to choke me and say "what the hell were you thinking?!"
