Backyard: Will Monotone- Beat Driven EP (2007 progressive house)

Despite what many believe, progressive house still has a fairly strong following in the New England area, thanks to clubs such as Rise and the Estate who provide the large room spirit that this form of music embodies. Most already know about producers such as Steve Porter and Eli Wilkie, who continue to produce within the genre, but let's shed some light on a release from another local producer for a minute: Will Monotone.

Although this isn't a new release (it came out in late 2007), it deserves a re-examination. The pace of the original mix of this song has a perfect atmosphere that compliments the early part of the night as people are starting to fill up the dancefloor and the buzz starts to set in. It's a bit slower in tempo with an almost tribal-like feel; it's focus mainly being on the percussion and bassline, leaving plenty of space to mix into anything else. There are several breakdowns in it that probably would work with attracting the attention of the crowd. I'm not nuts about the "immerse yourself" vocals (I wish there was an instrumental mix of this track!) but aside from that, it works perfectly as a warm-up tune. Miss Shiela provides remix duty, her interpretation spawning a slightly faster tempo and more of a trance feel with it's abundance of synths and pads. Recommended tunage for the big room!

Keep your eye out on Will- he plays on a regular basis in clubs around the Boston area, as well as spots such as Therapy in Providence. Check out one of his live mash-ups below.
