Featured Mixes: DJ Teebee- Deeper / 3 Deck Mix (drum & bass)

In drum and bass, Teebee is a figure who can be compared to Big Ben. He stands tall on the competition while quietly looming in the background without begging for the spotlight. Similar to the hourly bong of said clock, Teebee has remained consistent in the timely release of his output. Although he isn’t churning out tracks left and right and trying to permenantly hold people’s attention, he manages to release at least a mix a year, a couple of tracks on Subtitles label, and tries to showcase at least one breakthrough producer on this imprint each year as well.
Just ask Phace, Misanthrop, State of Mind, Spor, and Noisia; these guys were given a ton of exposure by Teebee during the last half of the ‘oughties.
Although quiet for much of 2009, he has proceeded to open the new decade on a high note with his Deeper DJ mix. Recorded using three CDJ-1000’s, he manages to put forward a fresh selection with an absolutely seamless transition between each title.
Similar to many other big-name drum and bass producers, he showcases a few “minimal” styled tracks at the beginning, and made a decision to play each track a bit slower than normal, at around 170 bpm. This allows a little extra breathing room between the relentless kickdrums and more of an opportunity to get a taste of the funk. A lot of recent techstep/neurofunk has been encompassing the minimal blueprint over the last few months, so it’s definitely refreshing to listen to someone who’s fingers have been at the pulse of the drum and bass scene for more than a decade. As it progresses, it builds nicely to some of the more dancefloor-oriented techstep everyone knows and loves.
Although he is known for his scratching in his sets, this is probably the first Teebee mix I’ve ever heard where he managed to keep his Superseal record out of it. Although definitely a good tablist, I’m glad he made this decision here, as I don’t think the scratching would go very well with this sort of drum and bass. Plus I think scratching in dnb is becoming a dated concept anyways to be honest!
