On The Boogiedownload: Mix 002 by Drew Surgical (Drum and Bass)

On tap for the second mix in our podcast series is Drew Surgical. If you’ve been involved in Boston’s local drum and bass scene for a minute now you probably know Drew, if you don’t, get to know! Formally known as Drew Stylus, he has always had the knack for the techier realm of drum and bass music. Always one to stay on top of new music and just do his own thing, he flirted with playing dubstep at parties way back in 2005, long before people even dreamed of it becoming as popular as it is in 2009. Surgical has hosted a weekly radio show on kunninmindz for almost four years; in that span he has witnessed the revolving door of DJ’s coming and going on there while he continues to remain devoted to it. Remaining consistent with everything he does musically, he isn’t one to follow trends or even rely on merely the newest or hottest records out there, he just plays what he likes, and this mix reflects that.

The tracks on this mix span the last decade, opening with a very underrated track by Marcus Intalex & ST Files. I first heard Dreamworld in 2000 when Intalex opened with it in a set I downloaded from the DNB Arena; even a decade later the moody intro still sends chills down my spine. Back in an era dominated by techstep, Dreamworld was a breath of fresh air and much of his work gave way to liquidfunk during the early part of the decade. Dreamworld isn’t over the top in terms of it’s darkness, making it more accessible to many drum and bass fans; the ethos in this song are mirrored in this mix.

Although techy in nature, Drew’s selection is one that can be enjoyed by all. Digging deeper we hear some recent work by the likes of Break and Survival, eventually traveling stateside towards the end to hear the likes of our domestic talent. “Street Knowledge” by Evol Intent and “Screw Up” by Ewun are easily two of our countries’ most well known drum and bass songs ever…period. Only Neo, Invid, and Ladies’ Night can test that theory to be blunt about it!

Drew utilizes a combination of Torq, CD’s, and vinyl when he DJ’s; however in this mix he made the decision to utilize only the black crack. Download it now!
