Over the last three months I have found myself listening to a LOT of minimal, tech, and deep house. I think it’s starting to become a seasonal thing; as soon as the weather gets colder, I start to indulge in the moodier, more stripped-down styles of dance. Or maybe I’m just getting older, heh. Either way, I haven’t recorded a house mix in years, so I decided to do one right before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Beatport has become my stomping ground for finding tracks to play and listen to, however I find myself digging through the New Releases section way more than the Top 100. It takes way more patience to do this, as there is a mind-numbing array of generic-sounding stuff there. I’m willing to bet that there are around 500 songs added to Beatport DAILY in just the tech house section alone! But around 2/3 of this mix includes some of those undiscovered gems I’ve managed to dig up over the past months. And of course, a couple classics too, like “What They Say”, “Dog Days”, and “Entrance Song” by Eats Everything (easily one of my favorite breakthrough producers of 2011, that dude is a machine).

Side note: for the music geeks out there, I called it “Full Circle” because it makes one full clockwise circle through the Camelot/MixedInKey harmonic wheel, followed by a very rapid counter-clockwise backwards circle!

The Identity Festival, the largest electronic music concert tour happening in America this year, is making a stop in New England on August 20th. Don’t be the only one in Massachusetts not going! In my seven years of living here, this is easily the biggest event showcasing dance music I’ve seen as of yet. It’s happening at the Comcast Center in Mansfield (a place you would normally go to see the Rolling Stones, U2, or Phish play). And it’s just barely an hour away from downtown, an added bonus.

The Comcast center in Mansfield. I’m willing to bet there’s probably a lot of subwoofers in there.

With dance music continuing to rise in popularity, it was only a matter of time before LiveNation got involved in the action. The result of which includes a very big ticket showcase of A-list artists across a variety of different styles of electronic music, from every corner of the planet. Everyone from rapidly rising Swedish electro house producer Avicii, to popular domestic artists Steve Aoki and Kaskade, dubstep kingpins Rusko and NERO, even legends such as DJ Shadow and The Crystal Method. And that’s just the beginning!

So no question this schindig is going to be big, and you may want to lock down your tickets now before they sell out. Luckily you still have a little bit of time- at least it’s a big venue, so the tix are still plentiful and not selling on Craigslist for hundreds of dollars. Yet.

Identity Artist Showcase Mix

After recording an artist showcase mix for the TOGETHER fest back in March, Gareth Middlebrook and David Day invited me to play a live set consisting entirely of Identity Fest artists on WERS at Emerson College the other day. I’m happy to say the mix went off pretty smooth, and I’m sharing it with you guys so you can get a taste of what to expect next weekend if you haven’t heard of any of these cats.

Following a couple days of grabbing MP3’s off iTunes and figuring out how I was going to whittle down about 75 tracks into a one hour session, I decided to sequence a couple of 5-minute mash-ups in Ableton layering up a bunch of the tracks, on top of mixing others the traditional way, to fit everything. This is the first full length mix I’ve done incorporating Ableton, and definitely won’t be my last! I had to use belt drive tables so a few of the transitions are a little rough, but overall there’s a cool balance of house, electro, bangers, and bass music in here. No dubstep unfortunately, but I did get some house remixes in of a few things by Rusko and NERO.

Many thanks to David, Gareth for organizing and bringing in his decks, and Jon Davies at WERS for recording and mastering the mix (he did an awesome job).

So this “dubstep” music everyone has been talking about. It seems like everyone’s aboard the ship right now. I don’t consider myself anything beyond a passive listener this stuff. However as a dance music blogger it’s my duty to try staying on top of what’s happening in the genre as a significant number of readers are dubstep fanatics. Dubstep’s impact extends beyond just the genre at this point, and that’s a pretty good way to measure its current success.

The other day I actually recorded a dubstep mix, something I knew I was going to end up doing at some point. There’s essentially a ton of different styles of the sound represented here (the versatility is one of the main attractions for a lot of DJ’s and producers). And, similar to most of my other mixes, a mixture of older tunes, obscure ones, and a couple of blatantly obvious anthems for good measure.

I’m 100% sure this is going to be my one and only contribution to the genre. My credit card will not enjoy an additional form of dance on top of the other half dozen or so I support and play! Regardless, hope you enjoy…tracklist after the download links.

Here’s the mix I recorded to help promote the TOGETHER 2011 festival, along with (MOST) of the artists who were officially booked at the time of recording. (I wish I was able to get some of SBTRKT & Maya Jane Cole’s tunes up in here, but they were still unannounced then!)

Although Together is over and done with for 2011, hope this slice of music serves as the soundtrack to the great week those who were involved in the festivities for many months to come.

So let’s imagine you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, and you just crawled out of your hole and want to figure out what events to go to in, say, the last week of April 2011. To get a bit more specific, April 18th through the 24th. You might want to mark these dates on your calendar. If you’re into dance or electronic music and live in Boston, you may even want to try to get a couple days off work or pray your professors aren’t going to throw any pop quizzes or papers your way. The annual TOGETHER Festival is returning for a second round. Thought last year’s version was fun? Oh just wait.

In terms of last years’ TOGETHER, my only gripe was the fact it took place in the bitter cold of February. Those long lines (every single event was pretty much at capacity) were a bit brutal that time of year! The TOGETHER team must have heard this issue echoed a thousand times over, which probably explains why it was pushed forward to the more seasonal end of April. Although this might be finals week for some college students, it was certainly a great choice on their end to host it in the spring.

A number of clubs and promotional groups around the city are banding, er, together (no pun intended) to make TOGETHER 2011 more badass than ever though possible.

Before I get into the details, check out the promo video below, crafted by Jared Valliere. You will love the eye candy, or your money back (wait what money, it’s a free video, eh?)

Now, for the info you need to know. (FYI: if you’re already familiar with what’s happening, skip to the next part of this post. I’m basically regurgitating the next two paragraphs from the press release.)

BBC Radio 1 veteran Mary Anne Hobbs will be making her Boston debut, with frends Mike Slott, Take, and Lorn in tow at the Paradise on April 24th. Dubstep certainly has a front-and-center spot in this years TOGETHER. And if this isn’t enough for the bottom end posse, Ramadanman/Pearson Sound (hot off the heels of a Fabric mix), Zed Bias, and Sub Swara will also be making appearances during the week. World-renowned trance trio Above & Beyond will headline Royale on April 21st. Trentemoller will play the TOGETHER closing ceremony on April 25th; this will also be his first Boston appearance ever (and I definitely admire whoever was responsible for getting Anders out here, not an easy or inexpensive feat by ANY stretch of the imagination).

Anton Pieete and Switch (of Major Lazer fame) will be touching down at Rise on the weenend of the 22nd & 23rd. Wolfgang Gartner, Shuttle, and Hot Pink Delorean will all be making their sophmore appearances. Future Rock is performing live during the week, Planet of the Drums resident Dara will be playing drum and bass at Elements, and Pantha Du Prince will make his debut at the Great Scott. Did I hear something about a possible Hearthrob Reunion, as well as a SUBduction fiasco with Night Slugs producer Egyptrixx at the consoles? And the list goes on, there are plenty of others I know I’m probably forgetting (leave a comment in the section below to call the ones I missed to my attention.)

TOGETHER Artist Showcase DJ Mix

This morning I found myself sort of curious about some of these artists. Before today, I wasn’t all to familiar with Pantha Du Prince or Anton Pieete. I know, I know, I know. As a so-called music “journalist” I need to be on top of everything….well sometimes I’m admittedly a bit behind the haps. Cruising around Beatport today I started checking out the back catalogues of these artists. Their sound is very deep and minimal, yet still funky enough to get a head nod or two even from the most stubborn listener.

Digitally digging through their back catalogues inspired me to take things a little further and actually go through the vaults of ALL the headliners playing TOGETHER 2011, and make a DJ mix showcasing their work. I’ve always been a big fan personally of themed mixes like this. Although they might seem restrictive at first (especially due to the fact that a ton of different styles of music are being represented at the festival), somehow with enough exploring there are songs that will just seem to fall together nicely, regardless of sub-genre.

After spending several hours meticuously searching to get the tracks for this mix, I recorded it one-shot. There’s a couple small flubs but overall it came together nice considering I wasn’t well familiar with a lot of what I played. There’s definitely a deep/tech house vibe especially towards the beginning, and it builds and speeds up, flirts with dubstep a bit towards the end (without actually playing any full-on), and the drum and bass switcharoo is pulled at the very end for the last four tracks.

Now Mary Anne Hobbs doesn’t produce so I can’t represent her properly here, but one thing I never knew is that Dara actually produced a couple of originals, as well as 1 or 2 remixes, back in the 90s. One is included here. Much of what is in here spans the last decade, it definitely isn’t all “hot at the moment” tunage. If you’re morbidly curious about some of the acts coming to town, I encourage you to check out this sampler and whet your apetite.

Not unlike last year, this year’s round of TOGETHER will be packed with plenty of events outside of the bars and clubs. The record expo and fashion show was one of my personaly favorite events from last year (what can I say I like crate digging). There are some GEMS to be found in those crates, and with people like G Notorious and Pete Dev/Null, two of Boston’s most prominent vinyl collectors (especially in the broken beat realm), DJ’s and fans alike should be able to find plenty at reasonable prices. Boston Cyberarts will be co-sponsoring, so bring a full wallet; they will have tons of T-shirts, jewelry, and accessories to rummage through. This takes place at the Pozen Center at MassArt (621 Huntington Ave.)

Producers will be pleased to hear there will be plenty of audio production workshops as well. Word on the street is Dubspot is involved this year. There will also be other happenings such as film showcases and art panels. Additionally, I would like to point out that the Greater Boston Food Bank is teaming up with TOGETHER to raise money for food relief, and they are hosting a poster/artwork contest. I will be posting info on this exclusively tomorrow.

In the pipeline I also have a Q-and-A session I’ll be posting here shortly with the man behind the mayhem, TOGETHER’s founder and creative director David Day.

If you want to be the first to find out about breaking news for this festival, be sure to follow the TOGETHER gang on Twitter, and check out their website (where content is being added on a daily basis). Expect to hear plenty of updates!

If you want a combined discount on all of the events if you plan on attending many of them you should consider buying a week pass. Click here for more info - buying this will grant you admission to ALL of the events and workshops (almost 40 to date!)

Over the course of the past 4 or 5 years I seem to have consistently been releasing drum and bass mixtapes right around this time of year in December. I’m not sure if the energy of the holidays urges me to kick things up to the 175bpm range or what, but figured I may as well continue the tradition in 2010.

I’m going to be honest here: I know drum and bass isn’t what is in vogue right now. However, it being one of the first forms of dance music I ever became interested in, as well as played out at gigs, there’s too much history here for me to just pack up and walk away. The magazines might try telling me greener pastures are elsewhere, but there’s still plenty of quality drum and bass music coming out these days. On both sides of the pond. In fact, as testament to the recent quality I’ve heard in just the past 6 months alone, I had to whittle this mix down from over 80 tracks I wanted to include to just over 30.

This project actually came together in one sitting. It was recorded in one take, then I mastered it and designed the cover art all the same afternoon. Even while occasionally getting distracted by the football games that were on (good lord, Peyton Manning is falling apart at the seams right now)

The title is mainly a nod to the different styles I tried to include during its 80 minutes. Hope you enjoy. Hit me up if you want a hard copy on CD. I’ll be handing them out and about at dnb parties around Boston over the next few months. The cover tray card prints nice btw!

When Matt McNeil sent me a tech house mix he recorded about a year ago, I knew right away he had a similar taste in house to myself. He ended up recording the first mix in the Beantown Boogiedown podcast series and is now getting some play time behind the decks at his Beauty and the Damned monthly on Canal St., which I had the chance to check out last week. Because he lives right near me in eastie, I figured that we should bust out a mix session.

Matt and I ended up recording a 2-hour mix yesterday and were pretty happy with the way it came out. 2 full pots of coffee, Serato, a stack of old school vinyl, and an M-Audio trigger finger were all taken advantage of here. Last night I mastered and edited it down to a CD-R friendly 80 minutes. So here it is, hope you enjoy!

Tracklist forthcoming; but to give you an idea of what’s in here, it includes stuff along the lines of Oxia, Hermanez, Jay Lumen, Butch, some stuff on Freerange, and, towards the end, my barely playable beaten-to-shit 12” copy of NY Connection’s “Bless the Funk” from ‘96.

UK Funky is probably the newest flavor of garage music, albeit only a few years old (the oldest tracks dating back to around 2007). However in that short span of time it has well established itself. Because it is about 10 beats-per-minute slower than dubstep it has squarely distanced itself away from that, and also focuses a little less on bass and more on percussion and pads. (Nothing against dubstep obviously, just a different vibe!) Many releases on this umbrella only come out digitally or only on limited edition (1 pressing only) vinyl; several years ago finding the good stuff took a bit of effort but has now become a bit easier as it’s getting more popular.

During the latter half of 2008 and most of 2009, I considered myself a casual collector of UK Funky; however in 2010 I’ve bought quite a bit of it (most digitally) and figured it’s due time to assemble a mix. Similar to most of my other mixes, it’s not a “newest hottest shit” type thing, it simply includes some of my favorite jammers from 2007 to stuff that promo’d last week. Overall I think it came together pretty well, if you are into UK funky, house, or garage check it out, and hope you enjoy.

Side note: this is the first mix I have recorded using Serato SL3; overall I am really happy with the sound quality. It’s about 75% SL3 and 25% vinyl.

This was a mix I recorded a couple weeks ago that became part of the trippysoundscapes series, hosted by Boston DJ Guarav Mehta. The first half of it is primarily deep house, and at around the halfway mark it gradually builds towards more of a peak hour tech-house sound. Most of the songs at the end are well-aligned towards the minimal side of the scale. It was recorded on 2 CDJ-1000s and 1 turntable, link and tracklist below.

Build it Up Break It Down is a drum and bass mix I recorded at the tail end of 2009. Although I was fairly satisfied with it when I first released it, I quickly shelved listening to or promoting it. First off, I am generally not one to include a picture of myself on the cover, opting to let the music do the talking. Strapped for ideas when designing the cover, I resorted to breaking my own rule! Second, I was very heavy handed with how I mastered the mix in Ableton. Going overboard on the Limiter is akin to pouring too much salt on a steak, but unfortunately I ended up doing just that. Finally, I felt many of the tracks in this session were a little dated and played-out at the time. I mean, I love “The Calling” and “Soul Patrol”…but seriously…I could’ve done without them.

The mixing and even much of the programming on Build It Up Break It Down is fine, but the stuff I mentioned above caused me to move on to the next project and scrap this one pretty much entirely. I much prefer my 8 Miles High and From Every Angle dnb mixes to this.

PS- If you like what you hear, help me win some CDJ-2000s from Letsmix.com by voting for it over there! Then I can invite you to my place to play them while I kick my vinyl habit once and for all in the extremely slim chance I do manage to pull it off and win, haha.
