Backyard: Good Morning, Good Night, Good Music.

Hearing filtered disco house always makes me nostalgic; it reminds me a time over a decade ago when I was younger, more naive, and generally had way fewer responsibilities and other things I now have to worry about as an “adult” (heh). Back around the turn of the century you almost couldn’t escape the marriage of string loops and funk-laden rhythm and bass guitars providing the framework of this sub-genre.

When cats like Donald Glaude, DJ Dan, and Pete Tong shoved all their records harking back to the era of roller rinks and Studio 54 in the closet in favor of current vogue styles such as electro and minimal, many became concerned that the window of opportunity on disco house would be closed once and for all.

One duo from Boston, however, is on a mission to change this. Instead of having to invent a time machine to take me back to the disco house heyday from a decade ago, Good Morning Good Night make it possible with simply a couple MIDI controllers and an APC-40. Having played a few select gigs at Paper and Throwed in 2009, these guys are on a roll, not only producing original tracks of this nature but also cranking out remixes as well influenced by bands such as The Streets.

Their newest work, “Fancy That!”, includes all of the ingredients of a successful disco house recipe. This includes the heavily filtered lead-in to the main bassline drop, which I wouldn’t doubt gets an instant crowd reaction every single time. Plucked guitar strings and a well-placed bass guitar within it’s sonic landscape makes this track stand tall amongst the competition. The overall melody is simple and memorable; even the unprecedented timing of the vocals (which do not come in until the halfway point) work real well here.

Be sure to check out a few other freebies they have made available as well, such as “On My Mind”, their remix of The Streets’ “Trust Me”, and Vampire Weekends’ “Horchata”. And if you like their sound, head over to their website to stay on tip of upcoming gigs and projects they have in the works.
