Thursday Throwback! K Solo-Letterman (Pete Rock Remix) (1992)

Having worked a great deal with EPMD at the very beginning of the 90s, K-Solo had a good amount of street credibility and didn’t have to sell anything out in order to have a 2-album stint on Atlantic back in hip hop’s heyday. “Letterman” was his biggest track, the video above is Pete Rock’s flip.

The sample king himself opted to stay away from the obscure jazz for a second to go straight for the most obvious funk riff possible…yet still making it sound fresh like one would expect from the Soul Brother. (It’s pretty tough to mess up that Atomic Dog loop!) Released in early ‘92, Rock’s remix actually preceded the first puffs of G-Funk smoke that emanated from Dr. Dre’s studio by a few months. But the sound of the west coast helped give this remix a bit of extra longevity and relevance.
