Jay-Z: Reach The Top (1994)</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.beantownboogiedown.com/journal/2012/2/9/thursday-throwback-jay-z-reach-the-top-1994.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

A lot of people assume Jay-Z kicked his career off with “Reasonable Doubt” back in ‘96, with maybe a few DJ’s like myself always thinking it was the “In My Lifetime” 12 he dropped the previous year. But Hova’s major-label debut was the result of a ten-year foundation he built for himself, working with the late Big L, Kool Moe Dee, and Jaz-O (his personal mentor) to lay the groundwork. No “Blueprints” were even needed after that for the castle Jay-Z built, but they certainly didn’t hurt him either!

So anyways, here’s a rare and unreleased track I found from the man circa 1994. Like basically every style of underground music, mix tapes that showcased unheard talent were quite common in hip hop during its pre-Internet heyday, like the one “Reach The Top” was on. Sound quality is pretty poor and you can hear the DJ making shout-outs over the choruses, but I’d rather have this than never getting to hear it at all.

Jay was still ironing out his cadence and delivery style back then, experimenting with both fast and slow tempos. Not sure who produced Reach The Top, but sounds like it samples from a vintage R&B tune pretty heavily. Further recommended listening: “Under Pressure” and 1990’s “The Originator” (probably one of the first ever recordings of the rapper).

We take a lot of things for granted in electronic music nowadays, but it wasn’t long ago when the majority of the music garnering props in niche genres like drum and bass came from only one location - the UK. Following the precipice of drum and bass’s widespread recognition in 2001 came social networking sites and message boards. The Internet essentially allowed producers outside England to network with the top dogs, tearing down what some cited as a boys club and expanding the genre to one of worldwide magnitude. Again, we take all this for granted a decade later, but the Internet has allowed producers from places as far away as New Zealand, to have a bite at the cherry. Enter the Upbeats.

Dylan Jones and Jeremy Glenn, the duo who comprise the Upbeats, have been at this drum and bass thing for the better part of a decade. Getting their break from Bad Company alumni Maldini and Vegas around 2003, these guys essentially picked up right where the well-respected Bad Company collective left off following their hiatus the previous year. With the support of highly-esteemed labels such as Bad Taste, Habit, and Dieselboy’s US-based Human during their fledgling years, it took little time for the Upbeats to build a fanbase.

One of the first cuts I heard (and owned on vinyl) from these guys was “Vodka Bender”, which emphasized a very basic monophonic synth riff you couldn’t get out of your head even after 4 bars of listening. I might hate vodka (don’t ask, too many college hangovers from that noise), but the skipping drums in the song give me all the buzz I need without the pesky headaches. Whiskey and beer taste better anyhow ;)

Since Vodka Bender they continued crafting heavy hitting rollers with gnarly basslines and pounding percussion. Ed Rush & Optical, Klute, TeeBee, Hive, Gridlok, and New Zealand mates Concord Dawn all signed the Upbeats to their respective labels, making the last half of the ‘oughties quite the successful one for them. Remixing gems like “Flame Thrower” by Gridlok and “Screw Up” by Ewun didn’t hurt either. And while the vast majority of their output comes from the vein of the darker, yet-still-funky techstep micrososm, they also threw down the occasional liquidfunk chiller, like the vocal “More Than One”, probably my favorite Upbeats jam.

So the Upbeats are making a stop in Boston tomorrow night at Elements (Phoenix Landing, 512 Mass Ave). Elements founder Lenore has certified both Jeremy and Dylan’s capabilities behind a set of not two, but THREE turntables, so prepare to be lonely if you decide to go outside for a cigarette when they’re on! MC Armanni will be on vocal duty, ensuring crowd interaction at all times…this guy has worked with a ton of different producer and DJ combos around the world, so he’s got the talent to back this duo up.

Get there before 11, avoid the line, and pay only $10! Facebook event flyer here for more info.

When I hear the work of an up-and-coming producer for the first time, there always seems to be a thrill behind what I discovered, especially if it’s someone relatively unknown. When the stakes aren’t high because a newcomer’s fanbase isn’t anticipating something specific, there is far more wiggle room to experiment; the resulting output is often raw and thought-provoking. Berlin-based producer Scope (Ric McClelland) is well aboard this boat right now; his “Seven Reasons” LP (released yesterday) doesn’t answer to any DJ, record label, critic, or journalist, nor is it required to. If Scope’s future output is as good as Seven Reasons, he will have little backlash to worry about from the sharp shooters.

Scope is being rather conservative if the “Seven Reasons” title refers to the number of songs that justify the purchase of the LP. I count ten. Each of the ten songs explore the true essence of soulful house, traversing a colorful array of BPM ranges to accomplish such. Nine-tenths of it pledged the deep house fraternity and breezed right through the initiation ceremony, donning the 909-shaped paddle to prove it. It’s amazing how timeless those vintage drum machine sounds are; and equally as much, the 303. There are a few acid squelches you can hear across the nine pieces that provide accents to the pads, rather than steal the whole show. The tenth song is a hip hop throwback which puts the synths aside in favor of a sequence of lush samples and stabs.

My favorite song of the lot? I’d have to say “In Doubt of Love”, a slow-paced tear-jerker with a simple vocal dub and killer black-and-white key combos. It almost reminds me of an Italo disco re-edit played back at 33 rpm rather than the intended 45. The 303 is very subtle, but seasoned listeners will instantly identify how well it accents the overall groove. Speaking of groove, “Myles Groove” (the hip hop-meets-house original) is another winner. Finally, there’s no fronting on the title track, which has strong ties to both Chicago as well as Detroit circa 1983. It’s a major head nod to the old school and simply as raw as any house track can get. None of these songs emphasize the arrangement or composition, favoring instead the melody and groove. They’re all pretty basic in nature, yet very catchy and will surely stand the test of time.

Grab Scope’s EP on Beatport today. It’s so fresh many of the tunes ain’t even on YouTube yet!

Stop whatever it is you are doing right now and check out this video by Babak Tafreshi. Hit the full-screen button, and double check to make sure HD mode is on. You might think this is just silly footage of a bunch of auxiliary telescopes in Chile at first, but just look at those stars and you’ll change your tune real quick. Tafreshi’s awesome video was shot with an extra-wide fisheye lens, which just seems to swallow up the entire sky and compress it all down to the panorama you see here.

The colors in the night sky are beautiful; if this was made 15 years ago you probably could’ve sold it as a screen saver and made decent bank off it. Oh well. I can never get enough quality time-lapse videos, and “An Astronomer’s Paradise” is no exception.

Tafreshi works full time as a journalist in the science and astronomy professions, and spends much of his free time with photography and serving as the director of The World At Night (an organization that captures time-lapse videos of the world’s landmarks)

Los Angeles has become quite the hotbed for stateside dubstep these past few years. Producers from the city of angels are born by the minute, and when it comes to dubstep, the ones crafting the biggest build-ups and heaviest basslines rise quickly to the top of the pile, regardless of past experience (just look at Skrillex for the proof). 12th Planet is another example of a guy who is making moves right now, but don’t let the name fool you, this cat’s got some skin in the industry.

12th Planet began over a decade ago with the name Infiltrata. He produced drum and bass with the likes of Spor, Photek, and Temper D. Just like he has gone on to produce dubstep, the latter 3 are now making electro, movie scores, and fidget house (amongst a number of other things) respectively. Times change, but smart producers who can keep up with the joneses won’t get left behind and don’t have to change up their style too much either. Infiltrata’s earlier work had the same heavy-hitting bass and tight percussion his new 12th Planet stuff has.

So here’s the good news: 12th Planet is making a pit stop in Boston next Monday, bringing with him L.A. counterpart Flinch, along with rapidly rising producer Crizzly on opening duty. It’s an Embrace show, so not only is it going to be big (Middle East downstairs in Cambridge), but you’re going to get your usual chance to win a pair of tix too. Leave you name and email in the comments section below, and on this Friday at 9am I draw and announce the winner.

And even if you don’t win, you can still grab some free MP3’s of 12th Planet’s latest EP, used in conjunction with the End is Near tour! It includes 5 tracks, one of which has Flinch as an accomplice; this is a taste of what to expect on one of the best soundsystems in Boston. If you don’t win, you can still get tickets here.

German producer Ian Pooley has a back catalogue a mile-and-a-half long. As the climate of electronica has undergone numerous seasonal changes since his first release in 1993, his objective remains consistent: to seamlessly balance the essence of both house and techno. Much of Pooley’s seminal work, including his 1995 “Relations” EP (released on Definitive, a sister label to Richie Hawtin & John Acquaviva’s Plus 8) shows how he managed to bring the best of both genres into the forefront across its seven tracks.

The Relations EP is like a best of both worlds, sort of like a porterhouse steak and a 2-pound lobster. The tracks are evenly split right down the middle; half sport the ubiquitous 303-squelchy acid lines with pounding 909 percussion. The porterhouse. Then the latter half, “Sorority” in the video above included, vibrate with expressive synths, strings, and everything serene. The lobster. Most wouldn’t want to mix their steak and lobster together in a single meal, much like most DJ’s probably wouldn’t want to mix Pooley’s house with his techno in one set. But, just like the way both the steak and the lobster taste separately, so does Pooley’s stab at both styles.

Sorority is basically a trophy garage house classic. I can’t say it is very unique from a lot of the stuff within that mold coming out around that period, but fact of the matter is it’s still a jam. It’s funny how simple songs like this are in style and composition to much of what is coming out today, yet still manages to retain a great slice of groove and overall class.

I always feel like I never cover enough trance on this site, especially on a local scale considering so few people Bean-side even produce it. Or, to my knowledge at least (producers feel free to correct me by sending links so I can check out your work!) Anyways I was digging around my Boston Soundcloud page just now and noticed one track boasting something like a hundred comments. Now as much as I try not to be biased and listen to everything, a song with that level of engagement generally tends to be pretty damn good. Especially if it’s coming from someone outside the A-list of usual suspects. So it didn’t surprise me that “Transit” by Luxe turned into quite the trance roller coaster ride.

Well, almost a roller coaster ride. Unlike your typical mass of steel and polyurethane wheels, the major build-up and drop of “Transit” actually happens towards the middle as opposed to the very beginning. But no worries; listeners know full well the momentum between the driving kicks and crystal-clear synths is there from the get go. Not only is the breakdown pretty epic, but like most stereotypical trance tunes, Transit has a very tightened arrangement that keeps its duration under six minutes (rather than an unnecessary ten). The mixdown is also very clean; it has a professional veneer that a lot of other demos lack.

Luxe is comprised of two guys actually: Mike Moss and Eric Kwong. Bonus being guest video work from V.Ka$h, who is a familiar face if you’ve been out to any of the Silent Disco parties, or anything Soul Clap used to throw back in the day. You can check out the video in the embed above. Can’t wait to hear more stuff from these guys, both on the audio and visual tip!

As most readers of Beantown Boogiedown know, I am not only a passionate supporter of local electronic music, but also the local creative community. Music and fine arts go hand in hand, so it’s only natural to stand behind a fundraiser that supports both! Blend Boston have been the names behind several dance events downtown, including parties at Red Sky and Good Bar. Branching outside the financial district for a change, Blend is hosting a daytime fundraiser party tomorrow in Somerville for the Arts Council.

Titled “Somerville Saturday Dance”, several familiar faces in the local DJ scene (D-Lux, Fuse & MetalKT) join forces with Blend residents Cousin John and Batwings at PA’s Lounge (345 Somerville Ave, Somerville). The $10 cover charge you pay goes entirely to helping provide grants to artistic talent within the Somerville community, along with providing financial support for art programs in schools and cultural organizations.

The Somerville Arts Council has been instrumental in helping make expressive public art a reality through efforts such as the Inside-Out Gallery, the Switchbox project, and the Windows-Art project. Many of these programs have been active for over a decade, and your support of fundraisers like this will help them continue to be a possibility for many years down the road. If you can’t make it to the party yet still wish to donate, you can do so here.

My former next door neighbor-turned-CreateSpace co-founder Matt McNeill has been steadily stacking chips as a local Boston house DJ over the past two years. He consistently puts out mixes, to the tune of about one each month. While early on, they stuck with the formula of tech house, he has since begun to branch out, throwing down everything from garage and early 90s house, to the melancholy “Emotive Motive” mix he recorded over the holiday break.

“Open House” is McNeill’s most recent and energetic mix yet. It reminds me of the house coming out in the late 90s: the tempo clocks a bit faster, the drums hit a bit harder, the riffs are a bit catchier, and the samples used a bit more familiar. Several garage-influenced tunes make appearances in the middle, made possible by keeping the pitch fader and energy level well beyond the 130 bpm mark. The sped-up four-RedBulls-down-the-hatch bootleg of Janet’s “Go Deep” suggest McNeill’s interest in classic hip hop and R&B, an idiosyncrasy you will find in many of his mixes. The session is a short 45 minutes and no tracklist is provided, but most mixes from the time period the songs on Open House represent didn’t come with those things either.

Shortening his name from Matthew McNeill (for the podcast mix he recorded for us in 2009) to Matt McNeill, and now Mr. McNeill, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll probably just call himself “ill”. And why not, that’s exactly what mixes like this are, right? Look out for future mixes titled “Curriculum Night” and of course, the obligatory “Parent-Teacher Conference” (that one will surely be house-influenced drum and bass).
