Bassic Presents Joe Nice, Moldy & Scotch 1 at Goodlife, Tonight 12.9.11

BASSIC is proud to bring back America’s original dubstep allstars JOE NICE & Selector Moldy! It’s been over a year since these two beasts have set foot in the bassment of the Goodlife bar to bring you the sounds of bass that rattles our skulls like no other!

JOE NICE (DUBWAR NYC, Gourmetbeats.com, Dataset Clothing) Baltimore
Representing Baltimore, JoeNice is universally recognized as the ambassador of the dubstep sound in North America and has been instrumental in the growth and success of dubstep for nearly a decade. In other words, he’s been playing dubstep before it was called dubstep. Joe’s monthly radio show on GourmetBeats.com was the first to feature dubstep in the states and his worldwide fan base continues to grow with his enthusiastic stage presence & live performance, upfront selection and skillful mixing. Joe’s record bag is a who’s who of dubstep… If you’ve never heard it before, chances are, you’ll hear it from Joe Nice. He is the first American-based DJ to play on London pirate radio, Rinse FM, the first American-based DJ to play the legendary DMZ bi-monthly bash and the first American-based DJ to play FWD>> @ Plastic People. A member of Electric SoundStage Radio, DataSet Clothing and resident & co-founder of the most successful dubstep party in North America, DubWar (New York City) and selected as one of URB’s NEXT 100 (in 2007), JoeNice is continually taking dubstep to the next level and beyond.

MOLDY (Heavy Pressure, Embassy Recordings)
A native of Portland, ME and seasoned inhabitant of Boston, MA and New York, NY, Moldy is widely known for his mind-bending DJ sets and deep, dark, weighty bass music productions. A “veteran of American dubstep” (flavorwire.com, 4/19/10) and “New York City dubstep pioneer” (thekronicle.com, 3/3/10) Moldy has been “quietly leading the charge of US dubstep producers since day one” (dubwarnyc.com, 5/29/10).

Scotch1 (BASSIC)
Scotch1 grew up on mix tapes ranging from Dj Hype to DJ Dan. He began playing records in 1998, and has since played shows from Boston to Bali, with countless venues and parties in between. His main rule when playing: crowd control. From low-profile mood setters, to in your face smashers, Scotch1 can keep any dance floor filled.

Supply Records and Headtunes are excited to bring you:

Trus’me

TRUSME’s musical roots trace way back to an early age where he dabbled with various instruments. He began studying production, but soon developed a love of vinyl culture, which shifted his focus towards the art of mixing and digging for unique samples.

Trus’me Live @ Secretsundaze, La Terrrazza, Sonar, Barcelona - June 2010 by trusme

Surrounded by the heads of Manchester and its deep routed scene his musical taste has continued to evolve, resulting in eclectic DJ sets where his passion exudes. Naturally, this diversity shines through in his production

His production is constantly compared to Moodymann and other Detroit luminaries with releases usually snatching ‘Record of the week’ in hosts of global outlets from Piccadilly Records - Manchester to Jazzy Sport – Japan. “Working Night” his debut was first championed by Gilles Peterson on BBC radio 1: “If there was ever a house record made for me, it would sound like this.”

“Working Nights” has proved a timeless debut album that is still finding devotees. This has led to an array of Trusme remixes being requested from acts such as LCD Soundsystem, Amp Fiddler, Dabrye, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Alton Miller and Anthony Shake Shakir

Trusme has also become a highly in-demand DJ and has been touring in the U.S, Europe and Australia extensively over the last two years. He has developed a reputation for thoughtful and eclectic sets, which perfectly represent his sound and open-minded musical tastes.

It’s time to catch a rising star in the making!

Opening set by: John Barera

21+, $5 before midnight / $10 after. See you on the dance floor!

Hot off the heels of his most recent release for Hemlock, Pangaea makes his return to Boston tomorrow night. If you missed him last year at Enormous Room, now’s your chance to hear in person his unique hybrid of garage & dubstep taken miles into the future.

For someone with an admittedly simple setup (according to him, just Fruity Loops, Sony Acid, and a pair of monitors), Pangaea’s new single does more than just maintain his flawless track record. ‘Hex’ on the A side is a stone cold dark-garage beast, and you can expect it to set things off big when it drops tomorrow night (crossing my fingers there). The heavy atmospherics and echoes are a familiar signature to fans of his work, but this track’s special touch are the psychotic reggae vocals which sound like they’re coming from a jammed CD player, yet with a nuance that takes a potentially annoying concept and makes it absolutely killer.

‘Fatalist’ on the flip has more of a tribal feel, with frantic congos and a warped melody that sounds like an oldskool rave lick that’s been dragged over the tarmac for a few dozen miles and then plunged under water for the remainder of the tune. The Untold-like slamming snares peppered throughout complete its edgy vibe and make this one feel right at home as a backdrop to some kind of caribbean voodoo ritual.

I copped this one the moment it came out (actually somehow 30 minutes before, if that tells you how close an eye I had on it), and it’s sure to draw a crowd for tomorrow night. The ever-solid Steppo and Damian Silva will be opening, so don’t miss out!

Also playing downstairs:

Dubstep Pioneer MALA Takes Control of Goodlife, Tonight, 8.19.11

Get your earplugs and drinking shoes shined up tonight and head over to Goodlife (28 Kingston St, Boston) to catch a dubstep legend take control of the decks in the basement, thanks to Bassic. Mala, one third of the Digital Mystikz and part owner of the highly revered DMZ record label, is coming to town. If you know who he is, you’ve already had your entire summer planned around this. If you haven’t, he’s kind of a big deal, and it would behoove you to get there early so you won’t be screwed when Damien comes out holding up the “we’re at capacity” sign!

Mala was making dubstep before people were calling it “dubstep”. Between 2003-05, he was very heavily involved in helping spread the sound in the UK, mainly through traditional channels. Along with partners Lofeh and Coki, they began hosting their now-legendary DMZ parties in Brixton, but promoted them mainly via word of mouth. You sort of had to be “in the know” to come check them out. The sound systems at their night were customized for maximum low end, and all of their music was played on dubplates. During that time, dubstep was evolving so rapidly that a lot of their music was never even released, so you actually had to come to the party to hear it. There was no sitting at home and listening to the songs on YouTube to make up for it…and Mala wouldn’t want it any other way. Proper exposure to these sounds is key for him.

Right now dubstep is undergoing changes in tempo, song structure, and then some, to the point where people (thankfully) aren’t even giving the sound a genre label to define it anymore. You can guarantee that Mala will continue to be at the forefront of this evolution. His back catalogue is scarce, with only a few releases each year with his labelmates, but each one is pure quality and the vast majority are only available on vinyl. Mala is not someone you get to see every day, so come down to Goodlife to check him out. It’s a guarantee he will have plenty of unreleased dubplates to play for the hardcore fans too.

Bassic 4-Year Anniversary Pics From Goodlife (6.10.11) Uploaded

I apologize A) for these taking so long to upload, and B) not making it to/shooting the Acid/DJ Pierre party at Goodlife the following day (thanks to the monsoon-like rainstorm that kind of inconvenienced a lot of people that night). Well either way, Bassic’s party was fun, as per the course.

Bassic 4-Year Anniversary :: Goodlife :: 6.10.11

Tuesday
Jun072011

This Friday at Goodlife: BASSIC Celebrates 4 Years in the Game. 6.10.11

Four. Four years of inappropriate. Four years of irresponsable. Four years of setting the trend, and not following those trends simultaneously. As any promoter knows, it’s hard enough to run a electronic music night for four months, let alone four years in today’s competitive marketplace. This hasn’t been much of a problem for the BASSIC guys though, as their night continues to grow in terms of its recognition throughout the city.

Goodlife has been BASSIC’s home since their very first party, which I was lucky enough to attend, way back in the summer of 2007. Although it was a small group of people on a humid Wednesday night, everyone in that room had a certain degree of excitement for music in general. Many people in the room that night such as myself came from a drum and bass background and was curious to hear what dubstep sounded like on a massive system. Either way, there was definitely a vibe amongst the 50-or-so people there.

Over the years, BASSIC continued to build a following, but not by mass-flyering or facebook event spamming. They did it via word of mouth and letting the events themselves do the talking. In fact, much of the promotion has come not from founders Chris Ward and Damien Silva, but rather their customers! This is a sure sign of a successful night, and I have little doubt that whatever happens in the rapidly changing landscape of dubstep and bass music right now, BASSIC will be here four years from now, pushing the envelope of what is hot in the UK and beyond.

Although dubstep still plays a pivotal role at BASSIC’s events, it should be noted that these guys, along with many of the headliners they book, are crafting beats that do not necessarily fall within the framework of said style. As the walls between sub-genres melt away at a pace never thought possible several years ago, there’s lots of opportunity to hear everything from house, to UK funky, garage, juke, techno, minimal, and what some are simply calling “bass music” in the basement of the Goodlife. I think it’s best to simplify “bass music” to just “music” at this point!

The first BASSIC party showcased the DJ talents of Ward (C-Dubs), Damien, and the production wizardry of Dan Dabu, along with local favorites Selector Moldy and Grapes. Going back to, er, basics, for the 4-year, it’s going to be the C-Dubs and Damien, along with residents Scotch 1, Grizzly, and Steppo.

Want a bit of a warm-up for what’s to come this Friday? Check out a fresh mix from C-Dubs, which he sent to me last week. This mix rolls nice and deep and it’s been the soundtrack to much of the blog writing I’ve been doing over the past several days. The dubstep he plays here is about as real as it gets: no anthems, no trendy stuff, no tracks that are “hot” today and forgotten about tomorrow. He shows several local producers, including Grizzly and Prism, some love, and is loaded with exclusives from one cover of the book to the other! Tracklist and download link below.

C-Dubs: No Respect (May 2011)
(320kbps, 59 minutes)

Transporter - Grizzly - DUB (forthcoming TUBA)

Cicadia - DJG - DUB

Who’s There - Seven & Youngsta - Subway
No Respect - DJ Madd & Chris SU - BLKBXXX

Secrets - DJ Madd - Wheel & Deal
Nocturnal Feelings - J. Kenzo - DUB (Forthcoming TUBA)
Jungle Fever - Cymatic - Box Clever
Cane Cutter - Be-1ne - Area Recordings
Stabilizer - Lurka - Box Clever

And one quick sidenote from the man himself: All dubs are approved for this mix and have been cut to 10in acetates. All other tracks on this mix are vinyl. There was NO serato, NO traktor, NO cdj’s used whatsoever to record this mix. 2 technic turntables and a Vestax PMC07 mixer where the only devices touched. The mix was recorded using Ableton Live with some light mastering done via Izotope’s Ozone 4 plug-in. Ain’t no bullshit tricks here.

Oh yeah, get there early to avoid the line and score a T-shirt before they sell out. And dress FANCY to avoid the cover!!!

Addison Groove at Red Bull Music Academy & Bassic, Goodlife, 3.16.11

Dubstep, juke and techno fans are going to be in for quite a treat tomorrow. Thanks to the efforts of the Bassic crew, as well as Jay Coppo, Addison Groove (also known as Headhunter) makes his triumphant return to Boston to headline not only a Bassic party, but also speak and perform at a Red Bull Music Academy session.

The last time this guy traversed the Atlantic and made his way into Boston was when Bassic brought him out at the end of 2008, fresh after wrapping up what became his “Nomad” LP on Tempa. This was one of his earliest projects where he folded a variety of styles into his dubstep work beyond just reggae and jungle. Elements of minimal, techno, even deep house made themselves comfortable within the rooms this castle of an album presented; and little did many of us know that he was only getting started.

Although he still primarily went under the “Headhunter” alias at that point, he spent most of 2009 working on his Addison Groove side project, kept very tightly under wraps until at the tail end of the year, he unleashed this seminal mix:

Headhunter - Juke Mix December 2009 by Headhunter

In one foul swoop, dubstep fans became instantly exposed to an entirely new side of this producer. Arguably one of the first to merge the energetic, hip hop driven sounds of Chicago juke with dubstep, this style caught on within the community very quickly. This is especially true for those who wanted a balance of the latters’ energy and catchiness with the space and atmospherics of the former. Although this mix consisted of many tracks from prominent Juke producers such as DJ Nate and Rashad, several of his own tracks were premiered for the very first time, such as Footcrab.

And the rest is history. Footcrab went on to becoming one of the most infamous tracks within all of dance music in 2010.

Addison Groove continues pushing his own sound forward; last year he procured a Roland 808 drum machine and continues to lay down some serious beats on Loefah’s Swamp 81 imprint, several of which are set to drop digitally and in 12” form very soon. Get a sneak peak of his recent work HERE in this mix. (Embedding and downloading is disabled, but at least it’s still streamable)

The Red Bull Music Academy workshop event begins promptly at Goodlife at 7pm. If you wish to attend, make sure you RSVP with Coppo (email: coppo@redbullmusicacademy) and confirm your presence on the Facebook event page if you have an account there. The Bassic party will begin promptly afterwards, with co-founder Damian Silva on the decks, as well as Bakir of the Spit Brothers, coming in from the left coast. This is going to be a fun one for sure!!

PS: This performer is not to be confused with Boston’s own Addison Groove Project…but fear not, I’ve been a big fan of them for quite some time too.

Soundcloud Meetup Pt. II & The Return of 2562, All At Goodlife, 2.16.11

2562 has been a pioneer at merging techno, house, and dubstep from the minute he put his hand in producing in the mid ‘oughties. His style and ability to seamlessly blend these multiple genres have influenced a variety of people, especially within the dubstep scene, to further explore different sounds and song structures. On the back of two very solid LP’s (2008’s “Aerial” and 2009’s “Unbalance”), he now has a springboard to do pretty much whatever the hell he wants. He also has been running his “Made Up Sound” side project, where he steadily releases straight up house joints as 12” singles.

This is the first time 2562 has been to Boston since early 2009. You can also check out Connecticut selector Slav on opening duties, along with up-and-coming Boston dubstep DJ Spliffolian. Early birds get in for $5 before 11!

Also, if you get to Goodlife super early, you will also get a chance to catch the Soundcloud Meetup as well. This is in continuation of the one that was held last week at Rise. Producers who wish to attend can bring CD’s to be played on the system (who doesn’t want to test run their joints on one of the hottest soundsystems in Boston?)

The meetup is FREE and starts at 7. It’s also ALL AGES, until 9pm. Then it goes to 21+.

House & Dubstep Producer Martyn Returns To Goodlife, 2.11.11

Over the course of the past 7 years, Martijn Deykers has become quite a favorite amongst electronic music fans in Boston. Better known to most as Martyn, this guy spans the gamut with the types of music he has produced within that abbreviated time span.

He first caught my attention in 2005 with “Next 2 U”, a drum and bass track that was quite unique due to the heavy Detroit techno influence it had. The following year he slowed things down a bit after a few successful drum and bass releases, bringing both Detroit techno as well as Chicago house influences into dubstep music. The sound he constructed was so successful he not only started a label (3024 Records), but he also released a critically acclaimed LP in 2009 (“Great Lengths”), and is now experimenting with a variety of different rhythms and structures in his music.

One of his recent releases on 3024, “Left Hander” & “Shook Up”, demonstrates his versatility; both tracks taking on more of a quality house aesthetic than even dubstep.

Martyn comes to Boston at least once a year, and has always been a favorite for the Bassic crew. He played last year at their third anniversary party, and we got to witness tons of surprises in his set (even some old Inner City and Juan Atkins at the end!) Martyn returns tonight at Goodlife (28 Kingston St, Boston). Bassic co-founder Damian Silva and SUBduction member Codiac are opening. Cover is $5 before 11, 21+. As per the course, get there early, it will fill up fast for sure.

Bassic Dubstep Presents Pinch, Steppo & Codiac, Goodlife, 10.13.10

BASSIC is proud to bring you one of the founding fathers in Dubstep, the one and only DJ Pinch. His 2007 album “Underwater Dancehall” was a milestone in elevating Dubstep to a new level. Featuring such mc’s as Rudy Lee and Dub War’s own Juakali, “Underwater Dancehall” takes us into a vocal rich realm that only a select few producers can accomplish.

Opening sounds will be provided by Steppo, Codiac & Dabu.

With over ten years experience in the game, and a serious love for all things music, DJ Steppo has recently started his own label, Lovewave Music - focusing on the futuristic sounds of dubstep, house, and techno. you can catch his radio show on dubstep.fm every 2nd and 4th wednesday of the month. For more info check out www.lovewavemusic.com

Subduction resident Codiac will be tagteaming alonside Dj Dabu, the creator and mastermind of the recent Boston Soundclash events, which have featured freshly made tunes from some of Boston’s finest producers.

3-some @ Goodlife 9.24.10: SCUBA, Bassic, Bootie Boston, Milk & Honey

Some historic events have happened in Boston over the past couple hundred years. For starters, there’s the Boston Tea Party. Then there’s the whole Battle of Bunker Hill thing, the seige, then several hundred years later, the Patriots celebrating an almost undefeated season in 2007. ALMOST. Then there was the night when Goodlife actually hosted THREE separate parties under one roof. Yep. This is one party that is going to go down in the history books, folks. A-list dubstep talent from the UK (SCUBA), alongside this city’s biggest mash-up night (Bootie Boston) as well as the first time they’ve actually had a DJ playing in the front bar with the Milk and Honey crew at the helm. If any kind of dance music is your thing, just go to this. You won’t be sorry.

Without merely just copy-pasting the info for this fiasco, just know that it has been short-listed as a recommended party you should be at on Resident Advisor! The headliner has also gotten custom M&M’s pressed up sporting his face on them. That is a FIRST for a New England party. Get there early, not only will the cover be cheaper and you won’t be waiting in an a painfully long line, but you might just score yourself a free mix CD from the Bootie Boston crew. Available only to the first 50 peeps!

Bassic 3-Year Anniversary Featuring Martyn :: Goodlife :: 6.4.2010

Boston Dubstep Heads, Tonight Is It! Goodlife, Middle East, Rise. 6.4.10

OK folks, tonight is going to be a big one for dubstep fans (i.e. pretty much everyone who listens to dance music nowadays!) If you do not know, Bassic and Soundbox collective were arguably the first promoters to regularly start promoting events showcasing dubstep music, in the summer of 2007. With the popularity of MERGE, their once-a-month garage and dub theme nights they used to throw at the Solstice Cafe (now Savant Project) prior to 2007, they knew that an outlet was needed for this growing genre of music.

And grow, it did! Bassic continued hosting events each month at Goodlife, each one growing significantly bigger than the last. They have seen countless acts roll through, including Starkey, Joe Nice, Martyn, 2562, Appleblim, and a host of others. Martyn returns in his usual form tonight, and there’s no doubt that because of how organic the sound he crafts is, it will be a completely different set than the one he played the last time he passed through, in January 2009.

Congrats to Bassic on three years of dubstep music in Boston.

Pandaia will be in the house as well, visiting from the Lone Star State!

Official event info:

“This party marks a huge milestone for Boston! We’re celebrating the releases of BASSIC’s own C Dubs. His remix of An On Bast’s “Upon the Dew Drops” crafted alongside La Folia Label head Inanna has been receiving love from big guys such as Axel Bartsch, Konrad Black, and Luciano! And his first release “Don’t Know, which was featured on the TOGETHER festival compilation has also been making waves.

We’ve got Boston’s Bad boys Damien Paul & Jay K rolling out the beats upstairs all night long so there’s something for everyone. Don’t sleep and get there early b/c we can’t guarantee there’s room for everybody!”

If harder-edged dubstep is your cup of tea, you may be interested in a show going on at the Middle East tonight as well. Excision will be touching down for the first time in Boston, and has been pretty busy this year, opening for Pendulum and perfecting his blending various forms of metal, drum and bass, and hip hop into his 140 beat-per-minute template. Terravita will be opening with a special jungle/dubstep-oriented set (a rarity these days, I don’t think I have ever heard them drop dubstep before), along with the Scoundrels (Scotch-1 and Prodigal Son).
