Crate Exploratory: Edward Oberon- Paradise/Uptown (drum & bass)

Edward Oberon is a stateside drum and bass producer hailing from New York City who served as one half of well known production duo Saburuko. With Russel Knight (who I cannot necessarily call the “better” or “worse” half as both guys are pretty damn talented if you ask me) taking hiatus to tend to other life commitments, Oberon recently kicked off a solo career. His most recent release on Fabio’s legendary Creative Source label is merely testament to his knack for organic drums, great melodies, and razor sharp production skills.
Said 12” on Creative Source is a two-tracker which includes the simply-titled “Paradise” and “Uptown”. The first of the two is a serious R&B inspired ballad; the vocals are not too over-the-top while they perfectly intertwine with the beautiful piano stabs. While the breakdowns in many drum & bass songs tend to be disregarded in favor to the main drops and riffs, it is quite the opposite on Paradise. The vocals and pads utilized in the halfway point here are straight up proper! We flip over to what is clearly an ode to Oberon’s ‘hood: Uptown. Bringing aboard some sampled vocals from an early 90’s Smif-N-Wessun joint, this track has a slightly more rugged, urban feel to it. The sirens and 90 bpm hip hop interlude reinforce this, although I wouldn’t expect Funkmaster Flex to be dropping it on Hot 97’s Street Jams anytime soon. Regardless, this is Oberon’s stongest 12” single yet in my opinion.
My rating: 9/10
By the way, Oberon is touching down at Elements this Thursday! Expect a good crowd as per usual. This is his second time playing here, his last time being April of last year which was a full house as evidenced by the pics I took at that party. (Address: Phoenix Landing, 512 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA)
