Featured Mixes: DJ Vous-Moombahcore (local-produced Moombahton)

It’s almost preposterous to think of how a seemingly benign happy accident behind the turntables can result in the formation of an entirely new style of music. Early 1990s breakbeat hardcore, which ultimately spawned drum and bass, can be traced as far back as the late 1980s. Many argue it came about when DJ’s in the U.K. would play house records at 45rpm (instead of their intended 33) to build the energy in the club (or, derelict warehouse if it was a true “rave”) to a heightened frenzy. 20 years later saw a different genre form in 180-degree fashion: taking a house record and pitching it down to “accidentally” create what we now know as Moombahton. You can thank Dave Nada for this, and you can also thank Evan Langley, aka DJ Vous for being one of the early ambassadors of the sound in New England.

Last year I wrote a piece on Vous and the original work on his Soundcloud account, notably a freebie he posted there called “Doin My Thang”. Since then he hasn’t slowed down, playing out around town, producing and preparing for his long awaited first proper EP: Roswell. It’s only coincidental that I post a mix he shared with me a couple days ago because Roswell will be properly released on Soundcloud tomorrow. Talk about perfect timing.

Don’t be alarmed by the “Moombahcore” title of this mix. It’s actually an energetic slice of summer that one can even enjoy in the bitter January cold. Soccer moms will appreciate Phil Collin’s voice making an appearance at the four-minute mark, which just so happens to be a remix by Vous himself. The vast majority of the tracks on here are remixes that flip the script on electro and house anthems, but doing more than just slowing them down to -12% on the pitch slider. A very active producer on Soundcloud, Vous linked up with multiple independent artists for this mix, including New York’s Delicious Layzas, Burlington’s Two Sev, and, to round things out geographically, Florence Italy’s Ckrono. All three provide a number of songs, including the ones you hear in Vous’ mix, for FREE, on their Soundcloud pages (linked above).

Expect to hear more from Vous this year, the Roswell EP is just stage one!

Crookers Comes To Boston, One Lucky Person Gets In For Free. 9.1.11

After a very short summer hiatus, Embrace Presents kicks off back-to-school and football season correctly by bringing a very big duo to downtown Boston. Crookers: you know the name, and even if you don’t, you know the influence they’ve had on a good deal of chart-topping music over the past several years. I’m honestly not even sure if they’ve been to Boston before, but following a youtube search that turned up zero videos, I’m willing to bet the answer is a solid NO. So if this duo is on your bucket list, get ready to scratch that shit off come Thursday.

Let’s start with their biggest song, a remix of Kid Cudi’s “Day and Night”. I first heard it when B.Rich (who lived in Boston at the time) handed me a mix CD back at the beginning of 2008 when LA Riots played at the same spot Thursday’s party is happening: The Middle East Downstairs. The song left an instant impression on me as the most memorable track on a mix CD rammed with cutting-edge house and bassline-driven gems. Fast forward to the beginning of 2009, I started hearing the same song in full rotation on Top 40 radio stations, probably the first song to achieve such status since Darude’s “Sandstorm”. 73 million views on YouTube is no joke!!!

Do the math to figure out what Crookers was doing between 2008 and 2009: impressing the pants off both the underground and mainstream, while getting asked to remix and do production work for dozens of well-known dance and pop acts. Synthesized and bassline driven music has become fairly prominent even on the FM airwaves these days, and I think this was in no small part due to the success of acts like Crookers.

CROOKERS FREE BEAT PACK by Crookers.net

What have they been doing since “Day and Night”? Well, for starters, they released a well-received full length album in early 2010 titled “Tons of Friends”. Living up to its name, guest appearances from, well, friends of theirs, were rammed into every song on the disc. Everyone from Will.i.am to Pitbull, Spank Rock, Drop The Lime, Rye Rye, and Kelis (no big deal there, seriously…) But the music itself made as much of a statement, serving as less of a DJ tool and more of an artist’s album. The music itself included everything from the house and electro sound they are known for to bilal funk, salsa, borderline pop (but with soul), no-frills hip hop, and even dancehall. It was so well received they’re still touring and hustling remixes based off of it.

Crookers present Dr Gonzo - Bust ‘em Up + Springer ( World Premier on Annie Mac BBC ) by Crookers.net

Non-album track “Bust ‘Em Up”, a duo between Crookers and Savage Skulls, have shown that during all of the touring, these guys still make time to get into the studio and crank out some beats. Returning to their dancefloor friendly format prior to the 2010 album, you’ll have the vocal stutter-edits of this one in your head for a LONG time after a listen. And be sure to check out the French Fries remix; he flipped that one HARD. (Hey by the way, did I mention that one’s FREE?!)

So thanks to Embrace, as per usual, we have a contest. Same as we always do, I’m going to give away one free pair of tickets to one lucky person who leaves their NAME and EMAIL address in the comments section below. And, despite the lame pun, you have one DAY and one NIGHT to get your comment in. Contest closes at 12am this Thursday. So you’ve got 24 hours, good luck.

On opening duty are Hot Pink Delorean, Bangarang, and the Bass Alchemists. You know who all these guys are, and if you don’t, get there early and get your learn on. They’re all making moves of their own.

Electro Monster Feed Me Plays Middle East w/Skism & Terravita, 6.29.11. Ticket Giveaway!

Next wednesday Embrace Boston brings another massive producer to Cambridge to work the Middle East’s subwoofers: Feed Me! Also known as Spor to drum and bass fans, as well as Jon Gooch to his parents, this guy has become very well regarded as a producer during his short, yet significant, music career of 6 years.

Feed Me’s earliest work under the “Spor” alias reaped the rewards of several very successful 12” singles and EP’s released on popular drum and bass labels such as Subtitles, Renegade Hardware, and Lifted. Thanks in no small part to Andy C’s rinsing of his tracks in the UK, as well as Evol Intent and Ewun’s support of his work on this side of the Atlantic, this guy became established very quickly. Many producers aspire to Gooch’s high level of skill in the studio.

In 2008, Deadmau5 signed him to his Mau5trap label to put out what was supposed to be a “side project” consisting of house and electro. Momentum and support was so strong for the release, which included “The Spell”, that we can pretty much call the rest history. His “Big Adventure” LP, released last year on Mau5trap, devoured the Beatport Top 100 late last year, many of its tracks becoming nightlife staples. Since then, he has released several respectable remixes for Chris Lake and Robyn, on flagship labels Nervous Records and EMI respectively.

Although Feed Me stays pretty true to his electro and house sound, culling massive drums and booming bass against piercing synths and catchy hooks, he also dabs in dubstep on occasion as well. “Strange Behaviour” on his most recent EP on Mau5trap a good example.

If just a little dubstep isn’t enough, Skism will also be there to provide support in that arena. With a wobbly, dancefloor driven sound, he is a perfect fit for a mid-summer heater and has plenty of original material to bring to the table(s). I’m personally a fan of his throwback (and Henry Rollins)-laced “Rave Review” on Never Say Die, but also be sure to check his cuts on Rottun Recordings, which event openers and local favorites Terravita also happen to be signed to.

Feed Me/Spor/Gooch has not been to New England since 2005, when he played a party in Providence with good friend and label mate Ewun/Kill The Noise. He touches down with Skism, Terravita, and Efrain Vargas at the Middle East Downstairs (472 Mass Ave) on Wednesday, June 29th. 8-12:30 PM. Facebook Invite

And here’s your chance to win a pair of tickets. As we have done in the past, leave your full name and email in the comments section below. I will draw a winner at NOON, on Tuesday June 28th. Thanks to Embrace once again, good luck and see you on the dancefloor next week.

2 L.A. DJ's in Boston: Doc Martin @ Goodlife, Paparazzi @ Rise, 4.1.11

Create Space Collab is back once again with the ill behavior at the Goodlife. This time around, they give the podium to Doc Martin, one of the longest-running house DJ’s stateside and beyond. Doing his thing for more than two-and-a-half decades, Martin was a pioneer of crafting the extended “journey” set, and inspired many people to pick up a pair of headphones and get behind the decks themselves.

This is Martin’s first set in Boston since Avalon in 2005. He’ll be playing a signature extended set downstairs for 3 hours, with Matt McNeill opening. Upstairs, CSC and Banana Peel residents Fens, Doctor Jeep, Elkid, and Mzungu represent.

Let’s just put it this way: although the cover is $7 before 11, and $10 after, expect to NOT get in if you’re there after 11. This place is going to fill very rapidly. Martin is not a guy who comes to town very often, and people will be coming out of the woodwork for this.

After Goodlife kicks you out at 2, you can still go party at RISE (306 Stuart St), So Dope (yes they’ve returned!!) will be hosting Paparazzi in the main room upstairs. I saw him at Rise last year when Damian and company brought him out, and he covers everything from house to electro, dubstep, hip hop, everything hot at the moment. Jay K and Damien Paul on opening duty. $10/members, $20/guests, $15/college ID.

House/Electro Producer Clockwork Plays Foundation Room, 3.24.11

Ok Boston, here’s another opportunity to claim “I saw this producer in 2011 before he blew up” bragging rights. Although he’s only 20 years old at the moment, Henry “Clockwork” Steinway has gone straight from the bedroom to wearing the headliner hat in just two years. Initially renowned for his remix work, Clockwork’s alias does the talking: his renditions of other people’s tracks are functional, make the crowd lose it on the dancefloor, and, like that old grandfather clock in your mother’s dining room, just plain WORKS.

Clockwork has spent a great deal of time in both LA as well as New York. He has churned out official remixes for Crystal Castles and Snoop Dogg, and many of his original joints are getting played by MSTRKRFT, Kill The Noise, and Felix Cartel. Astute dance music afficiandos know full well that these guys are all A-listers, a place where Steinway will soon be headed himself, especially with a couple more high-profile remixes on his resume.

You can check out his mix below, as well as many of his originals on his soundcloud. Just don’t listen to the mix sitting down. Do some pilates or jumping jacks in your living room, or to hell with it and just straight up go to the gym, this is a bassline workout from one side of the book to the back. Once you’re through listening, just go ahead and mark tomorrow night on your calendar. Clockwork plays Foundation Room in Boston (15 Landsdown Street).

Clockwork Presents: 2011 GDD™ Mixtape by ClockworkMusic

The second in the Creme De La Creme series hosted by Mike Tran and company, you can bet these guys are going to be bringing you plenty of fresh talent on a once-a-month basis. The Nightriders, Voltran, and NE Tempo are opening. Cover is FREE with Admission (click here for more info), and Facebook event page is here. Rock on.
