Featured Mixes: DJ Vous-Moombahcore (local-produced Moombahton)

It’s almost preposterous to think of how a seemingly benign happy accident behind the turntables can result in the formation of an entirely new style of music. Early 1990s breakbeat hardcore, which ultimately spawned drum and bass, can be traced as far back as the late 1980s. Many argue it came about when DJ’s in the U.K. would play house records at 45rpm (instead of their intended 33) to build the energy in the club (or, derelict warehouse if it was a true “rave”) to a heightened frenzy. 20 years later saw a different genre form in 180-degree fashion: taking a house record and pitching it down to “accidentally” create what we now know as Moombahton. You can thank Dave Nada for this, and you can also thank Evan Langley, aka DJ Vous for being one of the early ambassadors of the sound in New England.
Last year I wrote a piece on Vous and the original work on his Soundcloud account, notably a freebie he posted there called “Doin My Thang”. Since then he hasn’t slowed down, playing out around town, producing and preparing for his long awaited first proper EP: Roswell. It’s only coincidental that I post a mix he shared with me a couple days ago because Roswell will be properly released on Soundcloud tomorrow. Talk about perfect timing.
Don’t be alarmed by the “Moombahcore” title of this mix. It’s actually an energetic slice of summer that one can even enjoy in the bitter January cold. Soccer moms will appreciate Phil Collin’s voice making an appearance at the four-minute mark, which just so happens to be a remix by Vous himself. The vast majority of the tracks on here are remixes that flip the script on electro and house anthems, but doing more than just slowing them down to -12% on the pitch slider. A very active producer on Soundcloud, Vous linked up with multiple independent artists for this mix, including New York’s Delicious Layzas, Burlington’s Two Sev, and, to round things out geographically, Florence Italy’s Ckrono. All three provide a number of songs, including the ones you hear in Vous’ mix, for FREE, on their Soundcloud pages (linked above).
Expect to hear more from Vous this year, the Roswell EP is just stage one!
