Funktion Brings Past, Present & Future Bass @ Goodlife Feat. Kingdom, 9.23.11

Following a brief summer hiatus, the Funktion monthly (hosted by the UnheardUv gang) is back in full swing tonight. With the closure of Savant Project, they natrually have been promoted to Goodlife status….(wait, this sounds just like Bassic circa 2007, a cinderella story in the making!) Either way, Funktion has been renowned for bringing cutting-edge and experimental talent, both locally and abroad, to the spotlight for over a year now. They’re starting the school year proper with Kingdom, his first appearance in Boston since the first Together festival in 2010.

Kingdom’s music can best be described from an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach. Tracks like “Mind Reader” (released last year on Night Slugs) bring to the spotlight everything from speed garage, R&B, bassline house, 2-step, and what everyone is calling “Future Bass” these days. “Mind Reader” even attracted legends like Todd Edwards, who reported for remix duty. “Take Me” is one of Kingdom’s more recent releases, which is also very strong in the R&B department thanks to the vocal support of Naomi Allen. Kingdom has a keen grasp on traditional songwriting, and does a nice job applying it to the framework of electronic music. And the crazy part is he’s just getting started.

David Day actually got some facetime in with Kingdom earlier this week, an interview you can check out on the DIG.

Appropriately enough, G Notorious is opening for Kingdom (expect to hear a lot of classic garage, he’s digging through the crates from what I hear). Funktion founder De Qualia also on the decks, along with Rizzla upstairs. $5, 21+, get there early, all that usual stuff…

Martin Kemp @ Middlesex, 2.21.11 + Free Download & SubFM Stream

The SUBduction Productions team have been stepping up their game over the past six months, hosting guests in this city that everyone will be raving about six months from now. They have a show lined up tonight at the Middlesex Lounge (315 Mass Ave, Cambridge) showcasing the talent of both UK producer Martin Kemp, as well as NYC’s Contakt, who runs the popular Turrbotax night and blog which share the same name.

Kemp is one of the freshest faces on the rapidly growing (and evolving) “bass music” front, where genres or labels cease to exist. Have a listen to some of Kemp’s tracks below and you’ll see what I mean. The influences come from everywhere: house, detroit techno, R&B, soul, rare groove, it’s all in the crock pot. Kemp has also been kind enough to put a free track out there to the masses: a remix to Norrit’s “N Gbekinho”.

Dubwise @ The Enormous Room 4.5.2009 Steppo & G-Notorious!

Soulchampion returns to Enormous Room for their monthly Dubwise event! This edition features one of the most well-known Dubstep slingers in New England: Steppo from Providence. This kid knows his shit when it comes to dubstep music in general and has even been producing when he has time, getting tracks signed to the likes of DPR Recordings, the label run by Groove Chronicles. Check out some sound clips of his Caffeine Dub/Flossin MP3 release here

G-Notorous is probably the first DJ in New England to be showcasing UK Funky, a new style of dub-oriented music that actually draws the most influence from early 90's U.S. deep/garage house. It has a slower tempo than most dubstep and garage but is very danceable and, as the name implies, is funky

Vice-T is also part of the Soulchampion crew, and similar to G-Notorious has also been on the UK funky tip lately!

Check out the mix "Boston Gets (UK) Funky", mixed by both G-Notorious and Vice-T.
