Funktion Brings Past, Present & Future Bass @ Goodlife Feat. Kingdom, 9.23.11
Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:55PM
Following a brief summer hiatus, the Funktion monthly (hosted by the UnheardUv gang) is back in full swing tonight. With the closure of Savant Project, they natrually have been promoted to Goodlife status….(wait, this sounds just like Bassic circa 2007, a cinderella story in the making!) Either way, Funktion has been renowned for bringing cutting-edge and experimental talent, both locally and abroad, to the spotlight for over a year now. They’re starting the school year proper with Kingdom, his first appearance in Boston since the first Together festival in 2010.
Kingdom’s music can best be described from an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach. Tracks like “Mind Reader” (released last year on Night Slugs) bring to the spotlight everything from speed garage, R&B, bassline house, 2-step, and what everyone is calling “Future Bass” these days. “Mind Reader” even attracted legends like Todd Edwards, who reported for remix duty. “Take Me” is one of Kingdom’s more recent releases, which is also very strong in the R&B department thanks to the vocal support of Naomi Allen. Kingdom has a keen grasp on traditional songwriting, and does a nice job applying it to the framework of electronic music. And the crazy part is he’s just getting started.
David Day actually got some facetime in with Kingdom earlier this week, an interview you can check out on the DIG.
Appropriately enough, G Notorious is opening for Kingdom (expect to hear a lot of classic garage, he’s digging through the crates from what I hear). Funktion founder De Qualia also on the decks, along with Rizzla upstairs. $5, 21+, get there early, all that usual stuff…
