JMP Live Presents Emancipator, Harpers Ferry, 3.26.10

Emancipator’s intricate, artful beats have earned him the kind of organic success 99% of artists only dream about. His debut album “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough,” was released only in Japan, but it filtered out into the rest of the world thanks to determined fans who got the music before the label did, ordered the expensive import or donated money in exchange for mp3s. But in September 2009, the album will be released September 8th 2009 in the U.S. on STS9’s own 1320 Records. The re-release is timed with Emancipator’s first North American tour, 10 performances across the country including three stops with Pretty Lights in the southeastern U.S and appearances at Trinumeral Festival in Asheville and Symbiosis Gathering in Yosemite.

“Emancipator’s debut album ‘Soon It Will Be Cold Enough’ beautifully mixes hip hop beats with guitar feedback and a delicate piano melody,” Rolling Stone says. “You can feel his energy when he performs. His face lights up and you can see how much he enjoys the music.” Other reviews call the music “chill but captivating,” “fresh, clean production and sweet melodies,” and “damn cool.” Because it’s impossible to pin Emancipator to a specific genre, his fans struggle to describe the music: “Um, it’s really pretty, but like with SICK beats.”

Getting the evening started will be local hot new act Steady Knock, check out some of their tracks at their myspace.

Also Supporting will be Wobblesauce! Based out of Boston, Wobblesauce brings us an eclectic mix of live electronic funk, rock, and dance music! Combining Mike McCarthy’s sick-nasty synth lines and Derek Stromsta’s soulfully Santana-like licks on the guitar, the newer members Jake Boynton (Bass) and Cody Rountree (Drums) hold it down on the rhythm section. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone on their 14-track EP, so download it FOR FREE at http://wobblesauce.com/

VibeSquaD

In 1989 it was off to college in Massachussetts right as Phish was emerging as the new deal in east coast psy-jam culture. Then it was all about Jazz for a few years. i studied w/ saxophonist/composer Yusef Lateef and played jazz guitar for 8 hourz per day. then i discovered samplers! Joined a band called Boogie Shoes from Chicago and toured for 3 years straight (95-97) playin hiphop/live band flava (like the beasties w/ a funk band) until that wore out. Then i dropped out of music for a couple of years…

Then i Joined Denver’s Future Jazz Project in 2001. I made a kids CD called “Kids Are Funky, Too” in 2002. In 2003 Zilla appeared out of thin air (long story), in 2006 we started Sporque w/ Ooah (Glitch Mob) & Jamie Janover. I played my 1st VibeSquad set at Symbiosis Gathering 2006 (30 minutes long right before the Zilla set), but 2007 wast the year that VibeSquad really got rollin: releasing ep’s “Return of the Pudding People” & “Songs to Accompany Dance Move: The Worm” on NativeSate and Proboscis & playing numerous live sets Colorado, Oregon, California, BC, Texas, & BlackRockCity…. 2008 is starting off with a bang!

I listen to mostly electronic music these days (havent picked up my guitar in quite a while). I love making music with a computer.

i like so many artists that it is silly to make a list. my friends are my biggest musical heroes these days. i listen to lots of idm/downtempo/dubstep/electro/glitchhop/breakbeat/ but these genre names are getting silly already lets just say i LOVE BASS & ill beats in all of their glorious formz.

Big Gigantic

Boulder, Colorado’s Big Gigantic have been killing the live electronic music scene as of late. In the past few months, Big Gigantic went from playing a few club gigs around Colorado to opening for STS9, playing upcoming shows with Shpongle and Bassnectar, headlining shows through the South East and hitting summer festivals throughout the country.

Big Gigantic is the Latest project from Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) and drummer Jeremy Salken. The two-man sound-machine of Lalli and Salken showcases an array of gripping composition combining elements of a DJ and a live band setup, mixing thoughtful melodic ideas, with pulsating dance tunes. Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats.

JMP Live Presents Four Tet, 2.18.10 (Middle East) & Dub War NYC, 2.20.10

Four Tet is the name used by Kieran Hebden (born 1977 in Putney, London, UK) for his experimental electronic music-oriented solo efforts, to differentiate from his work with post-rock band Fridge.

Hebden’s solo work typically utilises samples lifted from various sources including hip-hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk mixed with his own guitar playing. Four Tet shares some stylistic similarities with other musicians, such as Prefuse 73, who use computer editing techniques that give the music a staccato, cut-up feel. Hebden’s music is notable for its rich, organic sounds and harmonious melodies as well as for eschewing the traditional pop-song format in favour of a more abstract approach.

Kieran Hebden began releasing material as Four Tet in 1998 with the 36 minute and 25 second single “Thirtysixtwentyfive” on Trevor Jackson’s Output Recordings label. Later that year, he released a second single, the jazz-influenced “Misnomer”. 1999’s “Dialogue”, again on Output, was Four Tet’s first full-length album release and fused hip-hop drum lines with dissonant jazz samples. This was followed by the double A-side single “Glasshead”/”Calamine”, which was to be Four Tet’s last release on Output.

Special edition of Paper this saturday at Harpers Ferry

Last edition of Paper before they break for the summer! Just like classes, Paper runs their events from september to may. Unlike classes, you're allowed to booze at them (although a couple of my professors made exception to this rule, none of whom I think work at my alma matter anymore haha). Paper usually happens on a Thursday but as it's the last event for a little while they're doing it on Saturday at Harpers Ferry. Looks like there will be a nice combo of bands as well as DJ's there. Don't miss out.

DJ Sega & Buraka Som Sistema @ Harpers Ferry, 5.1.09

Come correct with your power dancefloor moves this Friday! This event has been promoted on the streets for a little while now, and for good reason; Buraka Som Sistema is one of the most hyped-up live dance music acts going around right now. Buraka Som Sistema is a 4-person collective from Portugal who make kuduro music, which is an uptempo form of Angolian dance music full of vocals and percussive elements. They've successfully taken this unique sound and, with some slick studio techniques, have made it accessible to the average dance music fan like myself. They've got 2 albums under their belt, a couple of top-10 singles in the UK, and from what I hear, an extremely energetic live show. Not to be missed!

Opening is baltimore club producer DJ Sega from Philly, who is very quickly becoming a big name in the US dance scene himself. Discovered by Diplo several years ago, he's had dozens of tracks released on Mad Decent and Hollertronix since, and is about to drop his entirely self-produced mix, New Jack Philly, with almost 30 tracks, very soon. Until then, grab his Sega Theme Track MP3 here. Cheers to the Mad Decent site for sharing it!

JMP Live presents Future Rock (5.3.09) & Biodiesel (5.14.09)

JMP Live is a Boston-based production company involved with hosting electronic bands all around the area. They have been throwing shows for several years in a variety of venues, including the Roxy, Bills Bar, and the Middle East. From the looks of it they put a great deal of work into not only promoting their shows, but also utilizing talented videographers, designers, and photographers to promote their work online. Check their site out at www.jmplive.com for their upcoming schedule. I had a chance to meet Kyle from JMP yesterday and was definitely a cool kid. Definitely recommend checking out their upcoming events.

Their current site has a good amount of information and media downloads (video, audio, etc) from past shows, however they are about to launch their new site so there will be a lot of layout enhancements as well.

Shout Out Out Out Out opening!

Biodiesel @ Middle East
Thursday, May 14th

Tickets will be available soon on jmplive.com

Biodiesel puts on a good show, I saw them the last time they rolled through town at Bills Bar. Very energetic band and they incorporate a lot of tempo changes in their jams to keep things unpredictable. They tend to bring in various styles of popular electronic music and heard everything from dubstep to drum & bass incorporated into the show. Here's a youtube video I found of part of that Boston show:

Here is an MP3 link from Brothers Past (from Biodiesel's) last solo show at the Middle East, from a few weeks ago. Haven't listened to this myself yet, but thanks to Kyle for sending me the link. Taped by Jon Vasil and mastered by Rich Steele.
