Make It New Presents Miracles Club, Middlesex Lounge, 12.8.11

When you hear the phrase “live dance music” you usually consider there are bongos in the equation and perhaps a whistle.

Portland Oregon’s Miracles Club replaces those things with live drum machines (808, 909, you know) and vocals from Honey Owens. It’s such a unique style they’ve been called “vintage house.” Their cover of “Can You Feel It,” Church Song” and especially “Light of Love” has everyone talking. So much so the Grammy-nominated Cut Copy picked them up for their own label: Cutters.

The Miracles Club - Light of Love (Neurotic Drum Band Remix) by Cutters Records

The Miracles Club - Light of Love (Cut Copy Re-vision) by Cutters Records

Call them what you will, there’s no doubt you’ll be dancing tonight, enraptured through the classic house stylings of live electronic music. Believe it. They are going to make you sweat.

Support from David Day and Alan Manzi. Stay hydrated.

MiN 7th Anniversary, TC @ Elements, Blend Boston @ Red Sky, Martin Buttrich @ 131 Broad, 10.27.11

There is a LOT going on tonight. In the essence of time, I’m straight copy-pasting the info from the events. Due to photography commitments I can’t be in Cambridge tonight, but specifically want to extend the Make It New team a congrats for running their Thursday night ship for seven years. As we all know, running a repeating dance music event on a weeknight is hard enough to do for a single year, let alone seven! But without further ado, here’s the haps on the craps:

Seven years is a long time in the weekly world. That would be every Thursday at the Middlesex Lounge, a series of resident DJs have brought you the newest music from Europe and around the world.

It began with the Forced Exposure Sound System, supported by the latest vinyls from the esteemed distributor in Malden. Residents Billy Kiely, Caulder (aka Baltimoroder), David Day and Mike Uzzi (Unlocked Groove) made the most of the new minimal sound.

As the trends changed, so did the residents. As a larger sound took hold, local superstar DJ Alan Manzi joined the crew. Soon enough, he was joined by the dark mistress of Boston techno: DJ Volvox and the “Slumber Party” crew DJ Die Young and Baldur (aka DJezus).

Things got more “electro” for a while but once serious techno was back into vogue, the always-on-top of it residents brought the heat.

Now, with various residents off to future gigs and other cities, we’re proud to celebrate our seventh anniversary with you. For free.

DJ Die Young. Baltimoroder. David Day. Volvox. Alan Manzi. All in one special night celebrating our seventh year. We hope you can join us. And get us a bottle of Veuve ok?

WeNo.. Presents MARTIN BUTTRICH [Desolat // Germany] with Tamer Malki and Sergio Santos!

Thursday Oct. 27 Halloween Masquerade @ 131 Broad St. (Downtown Boston)

For info: Pepe Elias: 617 785 2514 | Fabiana Arselan: 857 389 8142
PRE SALES: Early bird $20

Martin Buttrich is something of a mystery. Quiet and unassuming in real life, Buttrich is the quintessential silent studio partner. Or at least he used to be.

In collaboration, he’s produced pop (The Sugarbabes), Italo house (Sounds of Life) and progressive (over one hundred collaborations with Timo Maas). He’s even been nominated for a Grammy (remixing Tori Amos ‘Don’t Make Me Come to Vegas’). But it wasn’t until 2006 that Buttrich came to prominence under his own name, releasing 12”s on Four:Twenty, Poker Flat and Carl Craig‘s Planet-E (‘Full Clip’). Buttrich still collaborates, chiefly working behind the studio desk for Loco Dice.

Martin Buttrich runs Time Tools studio in Hannover, Germany but is currently based in New York.

Retro-Themed Mirrorshades Party Kicks Off @ Goodlife, Sound Designer Mark Fell Plays MiN, 10.20.11

New party launches tonight at everyone favorite dance-friendly watering hole, the Goodlife (28 Kingston St., Boston). A once-a-month thing on Thursdays, Mirrorshades is a throwback to everything that was hip about the 80s. (And probably not the things people want to forget from the 80s, sorry hair metal fans) Expect to hear a ton of the stuff you remember from those rollerskating parties when you were in elementary school…or for the younger crowd, before you were born! In fact, in their own words, here’s what Mirrorshades is about:

Big empty houses on the hill, Arcades, Rollerskating, Carousels, The Lost Boys, The Future, Waves crashing, pools lit at night, driving to the desert, being in love, making it on your own, Saturday morning detention, Friday nights at the drive in, breakdance battles, ditching school, coast Highways, L.A. at night, neon lights, futuristic dashboards, being deaf to teachers and preachers and fast cars.

Resident DJ’s Gemini Caezar, Dusty Digital, and Kurt Sloan are all on deck tonight. Plus VJ Jay Medina, and yours truly on photo duty. FREE!

And if you’re looking for something a little more edgy and experimental, why not check out Make It New over at the Middlesex tonight. Sound Designer Mark Fell is playing there. He isn’t your average verse-chorus-verse songwriter; his style is very organic, non-linear, and loves to take a sounds and tweak the hell out of them. Take a listen to his Multistability album above to get an idea.

For Fell, the final product is more the journey that goes into creating it, rather than the end result! Expect this to be anything but your average record-spinning DJ set.

Composer and percussionist Ricardo Donso and Die Young are also playing. $10 cover, Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge.

Matt McNeill has stormed onto the Boston scene with Create Space Collab, a group organized to bring very serious techno jams to Boston. Already they have put mnames like Doc Martin and Dirtybird’s J Phlip to our fair city.

McNeill is no slouch on the decks though. Through meticulous selection, considerable digging and a respect for the history of house and techno, you’ll find names like Wax next to Tevo Howard. We’ve been looking forward to hosting him at Make It New for a while.

Pieces of me by Mr. McNeill

It is also with a bittersweet air as the night will be opened by and come to a close with our friend and long-time resident DJ DJezus, aka Baldur, who is heading home to Iceland for a spell. Here’s what he had to say:

“When I moved away from Iceland I felt like a polar bear in the jungle, completely out of place. Then I found Make it New and it was cooler than ice cold, my own little iceberg it was home.”

Damn we’re gonna miss him. Baldur has opened for some of the greatest guests we’ve ever had, like Martinez, Dirt Crew, Sian and Daniel Bell. He was always there with a smile and a helping hand. Please bring him a token of your love and appreciation (like, say, a record!)

Welcome Mr. McNeill to the decks and say farewell to one of the greats this Thursday at Make It New! The night is free.

Soul Clap's Triumphant Return to Boston, Tonight at Make it New, 6.2.11

The legendary Dancing on the Charles parties of yesteryear won’t be happening in Boston this summer, or probably ever again unfortunately. The next best thing would be to come check out the duo who was partially responsible for making those parties happening a Make it New tonight.

Many readers probably already know who Soul Clap is, but in case you don’t, let me put it this way: they’re kind of a big deal in the world of electronic music at the moment. They have managed to carve out a niche for themselves, focusing on the slower and sexier side of house, while injecting the sound of early 90s hip hop and R&B they grew up on into the formula.

Since last year, Eli and Charlie have done it all and then some: traveled the world, headlined large-scale parties almost every weekend, scored an Essential Mix, released a DJ Kicks mix CD with Wolf & Lamb, dropped dozens of tunes on an equal number of labels that have devoured the Beatport charts, even a Dubspot workshop that has garnered thousands of views on youtube.

Soul Clap is not only known for their production but also their extended DJ sets, played entirely on vinyl and acetates, that covers wide ranges of sounds, tempos, grooves, and time spans. Tonight they will be demonstrating one of their longer sets in action at Make it New at the Middlesex (315 Mass Ave, Cambridge). This is a perfect place for them as they hosted many a party when they once lived in town before relocating to Miami. Not only that, but they are playing the entire night, from 9 to 2.

I’d recommend getting there early, the place is going to fill quickly. Soul Clap had a significant base of local followers even before they hit A-list status last year, and they haven’t been to town in quite some time, so do the math!

"Technorganic Haunted House" Reigns Supreme at Make It New With Louisahhh, 5.19.11

LOUISAHHH’s dynamic energy behind the decks and in the studio has been captivating crowds and moving dance floors internationally since 2004. A New York City ‘boroughbred’ now based in Los Angeles, LOUISAHHH cut her chops on ‘real’ instruments prior to choosing turntables as her sonic weapon of choice. Since doing so, her primary purpose has been to transmit to audiences worldwide with the sheer joy she experiences from the music. This commitment to the craft has created a powerhouse on vinyl and a musical style with roots firmly planted in tradition, but with an eye to the future.

As a producer, LOUISAHHH’s distinct ‘technorganic haunted house’ is taking off, as is her work as part of NYCPARTYINFO, which has original work and remixes coming out on labels such as Nettwerk, This is Music Ltd, Top Billin and Nervous Records. Thrilling collaborations with Senor Stereo, Danny Daze and Gucci Vump are being supported by top names internationally.

Conde Nasty by LOUISAHHH!!!

Sharing the bill with names as celebrated and diverse as Juan Maclean and Derrick Carter, Tiefschwarz and A-Trak, LOUISAHHH continues to focus on original material and lifting hearts and opening minds on dancefloors around the world.

Make It New Presents Todd Gys & Soren Jahan, Middlesex Lounge, 1.6.11

While Make It New loves to shine a light on the national and international producers of the new dance music we know and love, more and more Boston produces it’s own talent.

the last time Todd Gys played a Basstown event, he was opening for Pantha Du Prince on Lansdowne street. Soren Jahan (aka R. Audiard), on the other hand, is a new blood who would try to sneak into the club only a few years ago.

>Now, the duo join up to take on Make It New in celebration of their original production, Tyrants.

Check out their release on Soundcloud:
http://soundcloud.com/defchild/sets/gys-tyrants/

And join us as we unite two generations of Boston’s brightest music makers. The 12” vinyl of course will be there.

Move D Plays Make It New at the Middlesex Tonight, 8.5.10

Move D (aka David Moufang) has been a name in the world of techno and house, but only recently has the community at large come to recognize his mighty work. We’re proud to be the latest to give him the respect he deserves.

Now, via SoundCloud and webcasts, the work of Move D is almost ubiquitous. His impossibly deep house and techno sets get props from nearly everyone in the game today, and he returns them in kind. Checkout his Five Star feature here:

Derrick Carter, Tonight 7.10.09 @ An Tua Nua, Clive Henry @ Rise.

2 parties going on tonight at An Tua Nua and Rise afterhours, if you don't have any other plans definitely check these out. Derrick Carter hasn't been to Boston in years, last time I think was when I saw him at Avalon in early '05. Carter continues to roll out funky house sets and is one of the few who hasn't hopped on the electro/indie bandwagon- he just continues to do his thing while still packing the dancefloors. Clive Henry has also been around for a minute, with a respectable number of tech and progressive house songs released by the likes of Hooj Choons and NRK in the pocket. Pat Fontes and Make it New resident Alan Manzi opening in the lounge.

This Thursday: Byetone/Make it New, Soulwax/Underbar, Elements

A lot of good events happening tomorrow night peoples. First up is Soulwax and Hot Pink Delorean at Underbar, hosted by Scion! Many probably know Soulwax under their other alias "2 Many DJ's"; they've been producing for awhile now and have been busy over the past months working on Tiga's debut album as well as their album and video project "Part of the Weekend Never Dies" which was released last year. The music they produce is pretty eclectic, during the past several years they've honed in on electro and even stuff with a vocal indie rock edge, but who knows what their future projects will entail. If you haven't heard them before, their Night Versions album from 2005 is a good place to start. Check the clips below, and get there early to catch Hot Pink Delorean, they've been coming out with so many new tracks lately that every set they play is loaded with new tracks and remixes!

If minimal techno is more your bag (baby) then Make It New has a great night planned over at the Middlesex. They have two artists who produce and play on the experimental tip on tap. Alva Noto is a German composer who is well known for creating compositions with unconventional sounds and really pushing the envelope when it comes to his entire workflow. He is well respected as a musician and has performed at highly esteemed events such as Mutek in recent history. Byetone is also playing; he is well known as a minimal producer but he's also a respected graphic designer as well. So it should be no surprise that he references typography in his album from last year titled "Death of a Typographer". Be sure to check these two producers, along with Volvox, tomorrow at the Middlesex!

And for the drum and bass heads, there's always Elements! Local producers The Statesmen are going to be playing, and if you've been regularly going to dnb events within Boston for a minute now you know these guys already. They are the biggest supporters of Boston's scene, it is a rarity when you don't see at least one member from this assemblage out at a drum and bass event. When they're not busy in the studio crafting their sound, they're throwing their event "Seismic" at Goodlife and Enormous Room. Check their myspace for their most recent tunes, such as Smile and Sandcastles.
