Nicolas Jaar Performs LIVE! Phoenix Landing, 10.13.10

**SPECIAL EVENT** It’s the Phoenix Landing’s 15 year anniversary celebration and Mid Week Music brings you Nicolas Jaar LIVE! from Wolf + Lamb NYC alongside fellow label mates SECT aka Soul Clap, Tanner Ross & Sergio Santos!

NICOLAS JAAR (Wolf+ Lamb | Clown and Sunset - New York)
Nicolas Jaar was born in NY but quickly relocated to Santiago de Chile in the 90’s, only to come back to his birth place as a teenager.

Haunted by Mulatu Astatke and Erik Satie, Nico started to make organic electronic music in 2004 at the age of 14. At 17, he made his debut with “The Student EP” on Wolf and Lamb Music with a remix by Seth Troxler who called him ” one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop”.

At 18, he continued producing and played live at Club Der Visionaire and Arena in Berlin, at the Marcy in Brooklyn, at Communikey in Colorado and at Mutek in Mexico City.

Now 19, studying at Brown University in Rhode Island, Nico has releases coming up on Circus Company, Wolf + Lamb and on his own label, Clown and Sunset of which he is the owner and founder.

His full length, entitled “ˆtre” will come out mid 2010 on Circus Company.

SECT (Culprit | No.19 - BOSTON)
There is a house in Boston’s rock-n-roll armpit, which contains a dance music energy that is poring over. Already immortalized by the 2007 Freerange Records release “The Lower Allston EP”, this apartment on Aldie St has become a true musical landmark housing a Boston super group. Its inhabitants, Charles Levine & Eli Goldstein of Soul Clap, Tanner Ross (aka Voodeux aka Marcel Wave) from the Dirtybird/Mothership crew and late bloomer Sergio Santos, have for over a decade been the blood sweat and tears of Boston’s unforgiving dance music underground. With a commitment border-lining obsession they’ve worked independently at their own music careers until one unforgettable night. Deep in the catacombs of Eli’s parents’ basement during a late night studio session they formed like New Edition and SECT was born. A secret society that channels the magic of their combined sounds to create something larger than life, SECT represents the future of American talent. Now, with the world of dance music teetering on the edge of change, SECT stands strong, united by a common goal to bring the torch back home.

S - Sergio Santos, lifelong DJ tastemaker and Boston afterhours King.
E - Eli Goldstein, one half of Soul Clap, drum programer extrordinare.
C - Charles Levine, one half of Soul Clap, bassline master and melodic visionary.
T - Tanner Ross, studio wizard, puts the “UMP” in PUMP

Phoenix Landing 2010 Boat Cruise and Elements Summer Lineup

Boston drum and bass heads will have a scorching lineup to look forward to at Elements all summer long! Although I personally missed liquidfunk veterans the Insiders after being out of town last weekend, I had a blast at the BelTek pre-game the other day. Elements photographer Stryknyne and BelTek founder Psydways were at the helm; you can check some of my photos from the event here. Now here’s what is to come:

July 15th: Andy Fess has been around for a minute, and has the record collection to prove it. He can easily navigate his way through a decade-and-a-half of drum and bass (across multiple styles), and it’s pretty much a guarantee he will do just that next week.

July 22nd: Fresh (of Bad Company UK fame) last played Elements right before the holiday week last December. This time around, he will have an entirely different selection of music in his CD wallet: components from his heavily anticipated forthcoming LP “Kryptonite”. The album is slated for release later this month.

July 29th/August 19th: Residents Crook and Lenore- they’ll always have brand new tracks with them, on vinyl, every single time they play!

August 5th: Original Sin are probably my personal favorite jump-up producers at the moment (along with Heist and Zen). Their “Grow Your Wings” LP released last winter has been a staple of many a dancefloor-oriented DJ since then. But it isn’t just all wobble business either; Original Sin have the knack for incorporating soulful pads and rhodes, along with vibe-heavy amens in much of their original work as well. Pretty sure this is a first appearance in Boston for Original Sin.

August 12th: The quarterly throwdown returns to the block; expect to hear six or seven DJ’s lay it down. All of the throwdowns pull good numbers, as each participant brings out their friends to hear the play their favorite bits on the Phoenix soundsystem.

August 26th: Outrage has been experimenting a bit over the past few years with a sound called J-Tek, which is essentially slowed down jungle at around 160 bpm. It incorporates today’s pristine production aesthetic with many of the characteristics of breakbeat hardcore music that were the cornerstone for what ended up becoming drum and bass several years later. Not sure if he’ll play his slower, J-Tek work as opposed to the more sped-up drum and bass, I guess we’ll have to go to find out!

And without further ado, on to the Phoenix Landing BOAT CRUISE!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to track down a high res version of this flyer, so this will have to suffice for now. But here’s the info you need to know:

Cruise is Sunday, July 18th.

Tickets are $20. 21+.

The boat leaves from Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston (near the New England Aquarium) at 6:30 and returns by 10pm. Advance tix are sold at the bar or by phone: 617-576-6260 (all credit cards accepted). Cash bar.

Not sure who is playing, but if I were to put my money down on it, I would say Pat Fontes, Crook, Lenore, and Randy Deshaies.

There will probably be an after party at the Phoenix until 1am. The Rebound guys (Benny Blanco and friends) will probably spearhead this. Usually $5 cover and I think this is 19+.

I’ll have my SLR and will be taking pics as per usual!

Here’s an old school Boat Cruise video from back in the day:

Midweek Techno Presents Davide Squillace, Phoenix Landing, 12.9.09

Tonight at the Phoenix Landing! This is Davide’s debut performance in Boston. Sergio Santos will also be performing the dual duty of opening along with celebrating his 30th birthday. Davide’s bio:

Davide Squillace is not available for comment. He’s got to catch a flight; he’s rushing to the studio; the stage manager is frantically hurrying him into the booth; he’s meeting to discuss plans for his labels…or any of the other myriad reasons why Davide feels like he hasn’t slept, eaten or stopped running for what seems like his whole life.

Born in Siena, raised in Naples, it took a trip to London for Davide to finally discover electronic music. Wooed by the mood and sound of the British scene, he returned to Naples flush with energy, excitement and a knowing that this new calling would consume him.

Davide Squillace immersed himself in this world in every conceivable way. In 1999 he began studying at the Naples’ school of sound engineering, tinkering with his first productions, promoting techno events, and finally performing. His first releases on Primate Records, Design Music and Conform were a cadence of his arrival and showcased the young artist’s steadfast style.

Having honed his craft at home, in 2004 Davide left Naples for Barcelona unwavering in his resolve. Now, while touring around the continent, he began to release in earnest what would become a massive body of work, and at a dizzying pace. His productions have graced the catalogs of some of the finest labels including Ovum, Shake, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Tuning Spork, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Sci+Tec, Rillis; the list goes on… Which is not even to speak of his curating and releasing on his own labels – Sketch, Minisketch, Vir, 500, Titbit and most recently the bold Hideout Records.

In addition to his genre-defining works, Davide continues to inspire and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Whether it be at Circoloco, where he has been a resident since 2007, Womb, Berghain, D.Edge, or any other marquee venue, Davide plays with an unequalled funk and excitement. His signature sets, revered by the masses and peers alike, do a double duty in guarding our much-loved traditions while constantly pushing them forward.

The realm of possibilities for one of electronic music’s leading lights is endless. Unfortunately, the minutes in the day are not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what you love and make no compromises.

Derrick Carter, Tonight 7.10.09 @ An Tua Nua, Clive Henry @ Rise.

2 parties going on tonight at An Tua Nua and Rise afterhours, if you don't have any other plans definitely check these out. Derrick Carter hasn't been to Boston in years, last time I think was when I saw him at Avalon in early '05. Carter continues to roll out funky house sets and is one of the few who hasn't hopped on the electro/indie bandwagon- he just continues to do his thing while still packing the dancefloors. Clive Henry has also been around for a minute, with a respectable number of tech and progressive house songs released by the likes of Hooj Choons and NRK in the pocket. Pat Fontes and Make it New resident Alan Manzi opening in the lounge.

Dancing on the Charles Part II this Saturday, 7.4.09

Not only does this event require no introduction, but for this installment it also happens to fall on a holiday! That means you get a bonus: they're running the event for 12 HOURS. Can you imagine how many beers you can drink in 12 hours, or how many quality house tunes you can hear in 12 hours? The possibilities are endless! And there's a nice balance of DJ's on the lineup, including Miztah Lex of EC Army fame, who makes his return to Boston from the flashing lights of LA for the first time! We also have Bruno, founder of the legendary Utopia nights, and your favorite residents on the wheels.

Remember to try to get there early, and also know that part of your cover price goes to the proceeds of the American Legion, as well as providing funding for an effort to help clean up the coast along the Charles River. So you're supporting good causes in addition to supporting the local scene!

Cassy @ the Phoenix Landing tonight

Stop down to the Phoenix tonight to check out Cassy Britton, a tech/minimal house dj and producer living in Berlin who has been on the rise over the course of the last 4 or 5 years! She has been revered to have a unique selection and command of the dancefloor...her resume boasts club experience behind the decks all over the world, as well as references from Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, and Richie Hawtin. Not bad! Her tracks are all released on big league labels as well (M_nus, Playhouse, Get Physical, etc). Between her original songs, her remixes, running her label, and DJing, it's obvious she's a woman of many talents- be sure to check her newly designed site here.

Check out some of her songs and remix work below!

Abe Duque/Pat Fontes' bday @ Phoenix Landing, 2.18.09

Classic tech/minimal house producer making an appearance in Boston! I've only been following Duque's work for about a year but he's been in the game for a long time, releasing records and remixes dating back to 1995. He's a fairly prolific remixer as well, twisting up tunes by the likes of the Chemical Brothers, Moby, and Miss Kitten, amongst many others.

The first time I discovered Abe Duque was when I found the record in the video posted below deep in second hand vinyl bin at Looney Tunes on Boylston St...easily my single best find ever in that store!
