Phoenix Landing 15th Anniversary Boat Cruise (Throwback Edition) 7.3.11

After years of talking about a reunion cruise, we have finally done it!! Bringing back all the original resident DJ’s at your favorite Electronic Music Mecca with the guys who got it started at the legendary Sunday nights, followed by Wednesday nights long running team. This is one not to be missed, as the golden oldies show the youngsters how it was done back in the day…so dust off the dancing shoes all you over 30’s and 40’s, and show them we still got it(for 1 night at least!). Featuring Ireland’s finest, Peter Bailey and Foxy John and Shannon Shalako(all the way from San Fran), Caseroc & Randy Deshaies, this night will be legendary.

This cruise will take a different route than normal, taking in some pre-July 4th fireworks, and please note the slightly later start time. Boat departs from Rowes Wharf as usual(behind Boston Harbor Hotel) in Downtown Boston at 7:00 PM and will return by 10:30 PM. Everyone 21 years of age or older is welcome with a valid I.D. $20 per person grants admission to cruise party as well as free admission to post party celebration at the Phoenix Landing. Tickets may be purchased in advance in-person or by phone with any major credit or debit card at the Phoenix Landing. Tickets purchased over the phone may be picked up at the boat the day of the event.

The regular PL cruise will be held on July 31st this year.

Music by past resident DJs:
Peter Bailey
Foxy John
Shannon Shalako
Caseroc
Randy Deshaies

The Phoenix Landing
512 Massachusetts Avenue
Central Square

Nick comment: This is not to be confused with the mid-summer/annual Phoenix Landing boat cruise. This one will take place on Sunday July 31 and will most likely include Crook and Lenore along with Randy, and several other Phoenix favorites who currently host events there.

Phoenix Landing 2010 Boat Cruise and Elements Summer Lineup

Boston drum and bass heads will have a scorching lineup to look forward to at Elements all summer long! Although I personally missed liquidfunk veterans the Insiders after being out of town last weekend, I had a blast at the BelTek pre-game the other day. Elements photographer Stryknyne and BelTek founder Psydways were at the helm; you can check some of my photos from the event here. Now here’s what is to come:

July 15th: Andy Fess has been around for a minute, and has the record collection to prove it. He can easily navigate his way through a decade-and-a-half of drum and bass (across multiple styles), and it’s pretty much a guarantee he will do just that next week.

July 22nd: Fresh (of Bad Company UK fame) last played Elements right before the holiday week last December. This time around, he will have an entirely different selection of music in his CD wallet: components from his heavily anticipated forthcoming LP “Kryptonite”. The album is slated for release later this month.

July 29th/August 19th: Residents Crook and Lenore- they’ll always have brand new tracks with them, on vinyl, every single time they play!

August 5th: Original Sin are probably my personal favorite jump-up producers at the moment (along with Heist and Zen). Their “Grow Your Wings” LP released last winter has been a staple of many a dancefloor-oriented DJ since then. But it isn’t just all wobble business either; Original Sin have the knack for incorporating soulful pads and rhodes, along with vibe-heavy amens in much of their original work as well. Pretty sure this is a first appearance in Boston for Original Sin.

August 12th: The quarterly throwdown returns to the block; expect to hear six or seven DJ’s lay it down. All of the throwdowns pull good numbers, as each participant brings out their friends to hear the play their favorite bits on the Phoenix soundsystem.

August 26th: Outrage has been experimenting a bit over the past few years with a sound called J-Tek, which is essentially slowed down jungle at around 160 bpm. It incorporates today’s pristine production aesthetic with many of the characteristics of breakbeat hardcore music that were the cornerstone for what ended up becoming drum and bass several years later. Not sure if he’ll play his slower, J-Tek work as opposed to the more sped-up drum and bass, I guess we’ll have to go to find out!

And without further ado, on to the Phoenix Landing BOAT CRUISE!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to track down a high res version of this flyer, so this will have to suffice for now. But here’s the info you need to know:

Cruise is Sunday, July 18th.

Tickets are $20. 21+.

The boat leaves from Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston (near the New England Aquarium) at 6:30 and returns by 10pm. Advance tix are sold at the bar or by phone: 617-576-6260 (all credit cards accepted). Cash bar.

Not sure who is playing, but if I were to put my money down on it, I would say Pat Fontes, Crook, Lenore, and Randy Deshaies.

There will probably be an after party at the Phoenix until 1am. The Rebound guys (Benny Blanco and friends) will probably spearhead this. Usually $5 cover and I think this is 19+.

I’ll have my SLR and will be taking pics as per usual!

Marz Presents John Tejada @ Good Life & Rise Afterhourse, Tonight 12.11.09

This is Tejada’s third performance in Boston this year; trust me, having seen the first two, you don’t want to miss this if you’re a fan of house music!

JOHN TEJADA palette recordings LA

Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

VINCENZO terdrop, dessous, poker flat, Berlin
Vincenzo’s serious interest in music began as a teenager, listening to Hip Hop and other styles of black music. Later, in the late 80’s, when Acid House reached the europe, he was infected by the sound and energy of this new type of club music. He started out his dj career playing at small clubs and private parties and soon Vincenzo found himself involved in the Hamburg club scene. Transcending both House and Techno genres, Vincenzo has became a household name.

Mark Farina @ the Phoenix Landing, House & Mushroom Jazz, 11.22.09

Mark Farina makes his return to Boston! Anyone who is reading this clearly knows what he has accomplished over the years, stemming from the strength of his many self-released mixtapes from the early-mid 1990s which put his name on the map and have now obtained legendary status. Easily one of the best domestic house DJ’s we have. His versatility behind a pair of tables has shined since the beginning, easily adapting to any environment due to his vast record collection spanning from everything to deep house, funk, trip hop, rare groove, jazz, funky/jackin’ house, and “peak hour” bits to top it all off.

The first hour of his set tonight will consist of his signature “mushroom jazz” style. Expect to hear some nice hip hop and downtempo music here- so get there early! From there he can go in pretty much any direction; the 3 times I’ve heard him play it’s been pretty much a different set each time. I like the lack of predictability!

Dancing on the Charles Part III this Saturday, 7.25.09- DJ Harvey!

DOTC's third installment this Saturday- you know the drill. Scenic city view, booze, great music, unmatchable atmosphere/vibe. Added to the mix for this installment is legendary UK disco house DJ Harvey who is touching down in New England for the first time (in his 20+ year career!) Harvey's early days involved drumming in a punk band as well as running in a hip hop/graffiti crew, not adding DJ-ing to his versatile background until later on when he began hosting his own house and disco residency in the UK and becoming well known for his sets that would stretch on for 6+ hours at times! Holding the distinction of being the first British DJ to play the Ministry of Sound, Harvey continues to expand his knowledge of house/disco to this day and has a song selection capability that is unmatched. Although he is far more known as a DJ than a producer, he continues to release some production as well as remix/re-edit work on labels such as Nuphonic and King Biscuit. You're going to be in for a treat.

The video below couldn't be better proof of how the song DJ plays supersedes the medium: the dude is mixing on a reel-to-reel deck! Bad sound quality on the video but cool to watch regardless. Below that is one of his tracks from '98 on Black Cock- these releases used to be very highly sought after, but it looks like they have recently been repressed, allowing a newer generation of DJ's to get in on the action.

Mark your calendars! Phoenix Landing boat cruise. 7.19.09

Just saw this posted on SoulClap's upcoming event calendar so figured I'd spread the word and give you guys enough time to try to get that following Monday off! I don't think any explanation is necessary here other than the fact that for this party you're on a boat, the beer flows like, well, beer, you get to hear some of Boston's best DJ's throw down on the wheels, and you try not to get seasick or thrown overboard! There isn't an official flyer yet but I'm assuming the midweektechno guys (Pat Fontes, Tanner Ross, Elijah, or Sergio) will be playing as well as Crook and Lenore on drum and bass duty and Randy Deshaies somewhere in the mix too. When the flyer becomes available I'll let everyone know. You can get pre-sale tickets directly through the Phoenix.

To build the anticipation, here's a few videos I took from last year's cruise.

Dancing on the Charles Part II this Saturday, 7.4.09

Not only does this event require no introduction, but for this installment it also happens to fall on a holiday! That means you get a bonus: they're running the event for 12 HOURS. Can you imagine how many beers you can drink in 12 hours, or how many quality house tunes you can hear in 12 hours? The possibilities are endless! And there's a nice balance of DJ's on the lineup, including Miztah Lex of EC Army fame, who makes his return to Boston from the flashing lights of LA for the first time! We also have Bruno, founder of the legendary Utopia nights, and your favorite residents on the wheels.

Remember to try to get there early, and also know that part of your cover price goes to the proceeds of the American Legion, as well as providing funding for an effort to help clean up the coast along the Charles River. So you're supporting good causes in addition to supporting the local scene!
