Udachi - DJ Mix for Chemical Jump by udachi

AC and Dell - Right Now (Udachi Remix) [OUT NOW!] by udachi

ATTENTION EARTHLINGS!!! there comes a time in every century where you are allotted one out of this world experience. Luckily for all of you oxygen breathers, that time is upon us. On December 16th prepare yourselves for the drop of your life. Master Udachi, lord of the womping aliens, will be firing his lazers all over the dance floor at club Rise. Be warned, there is a high risk your faces will be melted and your ears invaded.

Udachi’s music can be described as one thing, inter-stellar bass travel. His influences lie heavily in the psychedelic and manic aspect of dance music. Udachi’s tunes can swing from heavy bass inferno drops to frenetic percussive tropical rhythms. This came from an obsession in his youth with low-end frequencies, primordial drums, DJ Luna-C and Panacea. Brought up from the pedigree of hyperactive 170+ BPM hardcore music and Jungle, he birthed the bassline classic Jellyroll and a dubstep massive remix of M83’s We Own the Sky.

In the game for over a half a decade, 2010 was a big year for Udachi. He pumped out over 12 releases between Party Like Us, Palms Out Sounds and Nightshifters. Cut to the ever-changing present, Udachi’s recent activity includes two charting releases on Party Like Us Records, which includes the support of artists and taste-maker DJs like Skream, Drop the Lime, Aquasky, Flinch, Zombies for Money, Le Castle Vania, Annie Nightingale of BBC Radio 1, Deacon Rose of Triple J Australia, Deathface, ASBO Disco Radio, RinseFM, & Roska.

Legendary DJ Danny Howells Makes Annual Appearance at RISE, 11.5.11

No introduction necessary. If you like ANY kind of house music, just go. Howells will be commanding the decks the entire night at RISE (306 Stuart St, Boston).

Danny Howells by Buddhalicks

Not only is RISE Howell’s favorite place to play in Boston, but is also the only club that is open to his multi-hour set format (which needs to be heard from start to finish to be appreciated). From 1am to 7am Howell’s music will be heard on both floors, and anyone who expects to be taken on a musical “journey” will not be disappointed. The last time I saw Howells was in early 2010, his set easily making it into the top five I was lucky enough to be present for that year. Tonight will be no different for me personally.

Interview With House Producer Jesse Rose, Who Headlines Rise This Weekend (10.8.11)

Jesse Rose is one of the hardest working names in house. For the past five years, this guy has been putting out releases on a huge array of well-known labels, from Dirtybird to Get Physical, by way of Man Recordings, Freerange, and Made To Play. Jesse’s output is about as varied as the imprints that distribute his music to the masses, tied together with one common thread: his love of vintage house and techno.

Although he resides in Berlin, Jesse constantly tours the world. Luckily for us, he has time for Boston. He’ll be passing through this coming Saturday at RISE (36 Stuart St). You can expect to hear a great deal of tunes form his “Made 4 The Night” compilation, a collection of originals, remixes, and edits Jesse has engineered over the years. Remix work for Armand Van Helden, Claude Von Stroke, and Hot Chip, along with a Pete Tong Essential Mix several years ago, also make good small talk for his resume.

Made for the Night 10 minute Preview by jesseroseofficial

I actually had a chance to get a quick Q&A in with Jesse over email to help promo the night at RISE. Here’s what he had to say in regards to how he produces, what influences him, and some more tidbits!

Nick: I notice you’ve been collabing with a lot of other producers as of recent (i.e. Riva Starr, Round Table Nights, Cats-N-Dogz, etc.) Do you work with these guys remotely, where you kick stems and project files back and forth online, or do you work with them in person?

Jesse: I guess every collaboration is different, with Riva he sent me some stuff and I finished the track. With Henrik Schwarz for our Black Rose project we normally always work in the studio together, as it’s all about vibes. with Hot Chip it changes every time. Every person or group you work with is different, the most important thing on collaborating is that you respect the people you’re working with, otherwise it will never work.

Nick: There definitely seems to be a consistency in your work that nods back to both Chicago and Detroit, circa 1980-85. The first track of yours I heard was in 2006, a tune you did with Jimpster on Freerange called “Now I’m Ready”. Would you say that your sound and influences have changed a lot since then?

Jesse: Nope, I started djing in the days of Detroit techno, Chicago & New York house but have always been influenced by everything going on outside of house especially new styles that come up from London like grime, 2-step, drum & bass; these were the sounds I grew up on.

Nick: I know you’ve been producing for a long time. Any advice you would like to give to someone who is just getting started, and wants to do this for a living?

Jesse: Get ready for a long ride, it was nearly ten years after I started djing that I started touring the world. Then when I thought it would be less work it became lots more, but if you love what you do it all seems to make sense. Right now it seems like the best thing to do as a new artist is to release an album on the Internet for free. Make you’re own YouTube videos and get a following, then people will come to you and life should be easier.

Nick: What city have you not visited /performed in yet that is at the top of your bucket list?

Jesse: Hmmmm that’s a hard one. I still haven’t been to Iceland and I always wanted to go there. Also, somewhere like Peru, which I heard is great.

Nick: Do you have any upcoming projects in the cooker you’re able to tell us about?

Jesse: There always seems to be like 20 things going on. Right now I’m getting ready to release the first “Made For The Night” compilation via our new label. It should be released in the states late October and am currently touring a lot for that. I just remixed Metronomy and am hopefully gonna be finished on my next solo album very soon, am excited about that. Also look out for a free remix of “Well Now 2.0” which I’m about to chuck onto the Internet.

UMEK Makes Debut Appearance At Rise, 5.29.11. Free Ticket Giveaway

UMEK is a music making machine. He has around a decade and a half of experience under his belt, creating everything from edgey, abrasive techno to sleek and sterile minimal grooves. There are easily a hundred 12” singles in his back catalogue, and probably just as many remixes on top of that. With this frequency and experience, there’s no surprise that his name is a frequent on the Beatport charts. Despite how quickly those change, UMEK always manages to outdo himself, replacing last weeks content with something brand new about as fast as a printed newspaper.

Needless to say, it’s an honor to have him make his Boston debut. And not only that, but he will be alongside Terry Mullan (who is also a headliner status producer/DJ from Chi-town) and the Funky Splunkers (Jordan Jaser Kane & Randall) in the lounge.

And thanks to our friends at Rise, I have one ticket to give away! Same drill as all our other contests on here. Leave your name and email address in the comments section to this post. At Friday 9am sharp, I draw the lucky winner, so you have 48 hours to tag this post. Good luck to all who enter.

Tittsworth at Goodlife & Danny Howells at Rise Afterhours, Tonight 5.14.11

Two major events happening in downtown Boston tonight, with two individuals headlining who need absolutely no introduction whatsoever.

First up: Createspace Collab, Banana Peel and PBR are hosting Tittsworth, along with a slew of guest local DJ’s tonight at Goodlife. Tittsworth hasn’t been to Boston in over a year now, and with quite an ecclectic taste in cutting edge dance music, you never know what type of stuff he is going to play. (When I last saw him at Felt in ‘09, he actually played almost entirely drum and bass!)

And if you like PBR, you will like the fact you got there early. Free beer, as well as free fruity freeze pops (to coincide with the Sweet Shop theme) but if you snooze, you lose. I love these food-themed Goodlife parties, by the way. Promoters, keep em coming.

Alongside Tittsworth, all the Banana Peel guys are representing (Doctor Jeep, Fens, Elkid, and Mzungu). Additionally, Matt McNeil, Lacey, Kat Fyte, and DuPont (from Providence) will be throwing down ecclectic stuff upstairs as well.

Goodlife, 28 Kingston St, Boston MA.

Secondly: Danny Howells at Rise. Again, no introduction necessary whatsoever. He is a staple of Rise for years, and probably the ONLY DJ they let play the entire night, from start to finish. This is really the only way to book him proper, as he is a journey set DJ. You really need to be there for at least 3 or 4 hours to fully appreciate what he does. He’ll be broadcast in the downstairs lounge additionally, so if George Clinton were to write about this event, he’d simply state “Two floors, under a groove.”

When I saw Danny play last year it was one the top three sets I heard from a DJ for all of 2010.

2 L.A. DJ's in Boston: Doc Martin @ Goodlife, Paparazzi @ Rise, 4.1.11

Create Space Collab is back once again with the ill behavior at the Goodlife. This time around, they give the podium to Doc Martin, one of the longest-running house DJ’s stateside and beyond. Doing his thing for more than two-and-a-half decades, Martin was a pioneer of crafting the extended “journey” set, and inspired many people to pick up a pair of headphones and get behind the decks themselves.

This is Martin’s first set in Boston since Avalon in 2005. He’ll be playing a signature extended set downstairs for 3 hours, with Matt McNeill opening. Upstairs, CSC and Banana Peel residents Fens, Doctor Jeep, Elkid, and Mzungu represent.

Let’s just put it this way: although the cover is $7 before 11, and $10 after, expect to NOT get in if you’re there after 11. This place is going to fill very rapidly. Martin is not a guy who comes to town very often, and people will be coming out of the woodwork for this.

After Goodlife kicks you out at 2, you can still go party at RISE (306 Stuart St), So Dope (yes they’ve returned!!) will be hosting Paparazzi in the main room upstairs. I saw him at Rise last year when Damian and company brought him out, and he covers everything from house to electro, dubstep, hip hop, everything hot at the moment. Jay K and Damien Paul on opening duty. $10/members, $20/guests, $15/college ID.

Experience Iceland This Weekend Without Leaving Boston (3.18 - 3.22)

We all know how much influence Ireland has this time of year around the Boston area, but don’t forget about his slightly lesser-known cousin to the northwest: Iceland. A Taste of Iceland is a multi-day festival which has been going on for several days now in Boston. Bringing both the curious as well as the seasoned veterans of this small European island closer to those who don’t have the means to actually travel there, A Taste of Iceland brings Boston the best of its cuisine, nightlife, film, and music.

Many of the people involved in performing and promoting A Taste of Iceland are natives from the country, so the experience is about as authentic as one can imagine.

Although many of the food-related events of Taste have already happened, I wanted to briefly shed some light on several of the live performances happening this weekend, starting TONIGHT.

Baldur, aka DJ Ezus, will be playing TWO sets this weekend. He has complete control of the main floor at RISE (306 Stuart St, Boston MA) from 1:30-6am on Friday March 18th. Following this, he also plays Think Tank (1A Kendall Square, Cambridge MA) on Saturday.

DJ Baldur November Mix by DJ Baldur

Baldur is a well-known local DJ who has been involved in the Make It New night at the Middlesex on Thursdays for quite some time. He also spends a great deal of time playing not only in the area, but also in New York City. Expect to hear a diverse selection of techno, tech house and minimal!

Kurr by amiina

Amiina will be playing a FREE concert at the Middle East Downstairs (Central Square, Cambridge) on Saturday the 19th. This is an early event, which will go from 8 to 11:30pm. If you haven’t heard of Amiina, you might be surprised in the fact that you actually HAVE: they provided the string backing for Sigur Ros for over a decade! Following this, these ladies have been working as their own entity on the side, recently completing their second album “Puzzle”.

The weather is supposed to be pretty nice this weekend, so check these events out if you’re in the area!

Basstown Visions @ Goodlife, Plus 5-Hour Mike Swells Set @ Rise, 2.12.11

Jordan Dare is an icon of Montreal nightlife. Purveyor of dark, artsy techno and electro, Jordan is a regular DJ at Voyeur and I ♥ Neon, two of Montreal’s most insane dance spectaculars. Currently releasing on My Favorite Robot, he is also associated with Tiga’s genre-busting TURBO Records, having previously released on their White Leather sublabel.

Jordan arrived in Montreal in the early 90’s from the US, and made his name on the vibrant Montreal electronic scene in as little time as it takes to cross the border. Starting out as a prominent drum n’ bass DJ in the late 90s, Dare learned how to vary his style to keep winning over crowds for the next 10 years and became known as one of the most compelling locals DJs thanks to his dark electro mixes.

Boston Hosts Its First Soundcloud Meetup at Rise, Wednesday 2.9.11

I’ve been contemplating when someone would take the initiative to host a Soundcloud meetup in Boston- it is definitely something that has generated a bit of interest, especially amongst younger social media-savvy bedroom producers. Many thanks to Sonja Todorovic, it’s finally happening, and Rise is willing to host it under their roof. Hoping I can attend myself if I’m out of work in time.

This is Soundcloud’s OFFICIAL Boston Meetup, hosted by RISE and endorsed by TOGETHER BOSTON.

Come hang out and meet fellow Soundclouders. You have the opportunity to test your mixes on a club system, gain fans and make friends/frenemies:)

TO SUBMIT MUSIC FOR PLAY AT THE EVENT: Submit (1) track of your choice via our dropbox

Make sure it’s downloadable/ public and fully shareable please! Submit all tracks for the playlist by February 8th at midnight.

Since this is the first meet, there are no genre or BPM constraints. However, the sooner you submit a track, the more time we’ll have to assure it fits in an appropriate slot within the flow of the mix.

All tracks and artists will be announced via twitter at the exact time the track is played. This way, everyone can find out what’s playing while we keep interruptions and announcements at a minimum. We’re here to support and not roast each other.

The second portion of the evening will be a live jam. If you have any interest in participating, contact:

bostonsoundcloud@gmail.com

The format here will be much more controlled to assure that everyone has a chance to feature a track in addition to jamming over other people’s work in progress. There is room for 1 more musician. Artists TBD soon.

Stacey Pullen, A Techno Legend From Detroit, Plays Rise. 9.17.10

Stacey Pullen is a veteran from Detroit who followed in the footsteps of Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson in the early 1990s. He produced several original tracks released on Science and Virgin, as well as release one of the very first DJ Kicks mix CD’s in the legendary series in 1996. He also collaborated with Mr. C and released a full-length experimental album in the late 90s. During the past decade, Pullen shifted back towards mainly DJ-ing, and tours very extensively throughout the world. He stays on top of both technology as well as the music itself, utilizing Native Instruments’ Traktor to its fullest potential with a host of MIDI controllers and Pioneers latest CDJ decks. It is not frequent he plays Boston, so expect a good turnout for this one.

Criscotheque @ Oberon, Angel Alanis & Merlyn Martin @ Rise, 8.6.10

Ever wonder what happens when you combine a dance party with slapstick humor? Criscotheque may be right up your alley. Caseroc is on the decks, and will be combined with at least a half dozen different comedians and video work from VJ Serial Krusher. Doors open at 10:30, comedy show starts first, followed by Caseroc’s set from 12:30-2.

Tickets are available here: http://www.cluboberon.com/shows.html#criscotheque
Price is $15 for just dancefloor admission, $25 for VIP seating in advance. Goes up to $20/$30 at the door.

Club Oberon, 2 Arrow St, Cambridge MA

After Criscotheque I will most likely be making my way over to RISE for afterhours. I haven’t seen Chicago legend Angel Alanis before, and am psyched to watch Sarah Ikerd and Jeff Curtis make their Rise debut in the lounge (they are both well versed in quality house, and Sarah’s blog thegigabeat has been on my RSS reader for months). Merlyn Martin and Torin will open and close Alanis upstairs respectively.
