2 L.A. DJ's in Boston: Doc Martin @ Goodlife, Paparazzi @ Rise, 4.1.11

Create Space Collab is back once again with the ill behavior at the Goodlife. This time around, they give the podium to Doc Martin, one of the longest-running house DJ’s stateside and beyond. Doing his thing for more than two-and-a-half decades, Martin was a pioneer of crafting the extended “journey” set, and inspired many people to pick up a pair of headphones and get behind the decks themselves.

This is Martin’s first set in Boston since Avalon in 2005. He’ll be playing a signature extended set downstairs for 3 hours, with Matt McNeill opening. Upstairs, CSC and Banana Peel residents Fens, Doctor Jeep, Elkid, and Mzungu represent. 

Let’s just put it this way: although the cover is $7 before 11, and $10 after, expect to NOT get in if you’re there after 11. This place is going to fill very rapidly. Martin is not a guy who comes to town very often, and people will be coming out of the woodwork for this.

After Goodlife kicks you out at 2, you can still go party at RISE (306 Stuart St), So Dope (yes they’ve returned!!) will be hosting Paparazzi in the main room upstairs. I saw him at Rise last year when Damian and company brought him out, and he covers everything from house to electro, dubstep, hip hop, everything hot at the moment. Jay K and Damien Paul on opening duty. $10/members, $20/guests, $15/college ID.

Boston Dubstep Heads, Tonight Is It! Goodlife, Middle East, Rise. 6.4.10

OK folks, tonight is going to be a big one for dubstep fans (i.e. pretty much everyone who listens to dance music nowadays!) If you do not know, Bassic and Soundbox collective were arguably the first promoters to regularly start promoting events showcasing dubstep music, in the summer of 2007. With the popularity of MERGE, their once-a-month garage and dub theme nights they used to throw at the Solstice Cafe (now Savant Project) prior to 2007, they knew that an outlet was needed for this growing genre of music.

And grow, it did! Bassic continued hosting events each month at Goodlife, each one growing significantly bigger than the last. They have seen countless acts roll through, including Starkey, Joe Nice, Martyn, 2562, Appleblim, and a host of others. Martyn returns in his usual form tonight, and there’s no doubt that because of how organic the sound he crafts is, it will be a completely different set than the one he played the last time he passed through, in January 2009. 

Congrats to Bassic on three years of dubstep music in Boston.

Pandaia will be in the house as well, visiting from the Lone Star State!

If harder-edged dubstep is your cup of tea, you may be interested in a show going on at the Middle East tonight as well. Excision will be touching down for the first time in Boston, and has been pretty busy this year, opening for Pendulum and perfecting his blending various forms of metal, drum and bass, and hip hop into his 140 beat-per-minute template. Terravita will be opening with a special jungle/dubstep-oriented set (a rarity these days, I don’t think I have ever heard them drop dubstep before), along with the Scoundrels (Scotch-1 and Prodigal Son).

Another installment of Detox at Rise afterhours, hosted by the So Dope crew! This time around they're bringing in former Boston producer B.Rich, who is quickly becoming one of the biggest upcoming names in dance music in the northeast. He has been honing his skills as a producer and is currently very busy in the studio working with the likes of Udachi and AC Slater on basically any form of peak hour ass-shaking dance music that you can fathom. He will bring the heat tomorrow as he always does.
