SOUL CLAP Returns to Boston, Plays Re:Set Tonight With Slow Hands 11.23.11

Soul Clap tonight. Absolutely no introduction necessary. Re:Set is hosting them at their old stomping grounds, The Phoenix Landing (512 Mass Ave, Cambridge). Fellow labelmates Slow Hands also performing live. Some soundcloud embeds below of some of their recent work, including a couple of freebies.

I shouldn’t have to state the obvious, but I will anyhow: GET THERE EARLY. They will hit capacity quickly, especially considering the *very* reasonable $5 cover charge!

Soul Clap's Triumphant Return to Boston, Tonight at Make it New, 6.2.11

The legendary Dancing on the Charles parties of yesteryear won’t be happening in Boston this summer, or probably ever again unfortunately. The next best thing would be to come check out the duo who was partially responsible for making those parties happening a Make it New tonight.

Many readers probably already know who Soul Clap is, but in case you don’t, let me put it this way: they’re kind of a big deal in the world of electronic music at the moment. They have managed to carve out a niche for themselves, focusing on the slower and sexier side of house, while injecting the sound of early 90s hip hop and R&B they grew up on into the formula.

Since last year, Eli and Charlie have done it all and then some: traveled the world, headlined large-scale parties almost every weekend, scored an Essential Mix, released a DJ Kicks mix CD with Wolf & Lamb, dropped dozens of tunes on an equal number of labels that have devoured the Beatport charts, even a Dubspot workshop that has garnered thousands of views on youtube.

Soul Clap is not only known for their production but also their extended DJ sets, played entirely on vinyl and acetates, that covers wide ranges of sounds, tempos, grooves, and time spans. Tonight they will be demonstrating one of their longer sets in action at Make it New at the Middlesex (315 Mass Ave, Cambridge). This is a perfect place for them as they hosted many a party when they once lived in town before relocating to Miami. Not only that, but they are playing the entire night, from 9 to 2.

I’d recommend getting there early, the place is going to fill quickly. Soul Clap had a significant base of local followers even before they hit A-list status last year, and they haven’t been to town in quite some time, so do the math!

Nicolas Jaar Performs LIVE! Phoenix Landing, 10.13.10

Image credit: http://images.fabriclondon.com/blog

**SPECIAL EVENT** It’s the Phoenix Landing’s 15 year anniversary celebration and Mid Week Music brings you Nicolas Jaar LIVE! from Wolf + Lamb NYC alongside fellow label mates SECT aka Soul Clap, Tanner Ross & Sergio Santos!

NICOLAS JAAR (Wolf+ Lamb | Clown and Sunset - New York)
Nicolas Jaar was born in NY but quickly relocated to Santiago de Chile in the 90’s, only to come back to his birth place as a teenager.

Haunted by Mulatu Astatke and Erik Satie, Nico started to make organic electronic music in 2004 at the age of 14. At 17, he made his debut with “The Student EP” on Wolf and Lamb Music with a remix by Seth Troxler who called him ” one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop”.

At 18, he continued producing and played live at Club Der Visionaire and Arena in Berlin, at the Marcy in Brooklyn, at Communikey in Colorado and at Mutek in Mexico City.

Now 19, studying at Brown University in Rhode Island, Nico has releases coming up on Circus Company, Wolf + Lamb and on his own label, Clown and Sunset of which he is the owner and founder.

His full length, entitled “ˆtre” will come out mid 2010 on Circus Company.

SECT (Culprit | No.19 - BOSTON)
There is a house in Boston’s rock-n-roll armpit, which contains a dance music energy that is poring over. Already immortalized by the 2007 Freerange Records release “The Lower Allston EP”, this apartment on Aldie St has become a true musical landmark housing a Boston super group. Its inhabitants, Charles Levine & Eli Goldstein of Soul Clap, Tanner Ross (aka Voodeux aka Marcel Wave) from the Dirtybird/Mothership crew and late bloomer Sergio Santos, have for over a decade been the blood sweat and tears of Boston’s unforgiving dance music underground. With a commitment border-lining obsession they’ve worked independently at their own music careers until one unforgettable night. Deep in the catacombs of Eli’s parents’ basement during a late night studio session they formed like New Edition and SECT was born. A secret society that channels the magic of their combined sounds to create something larger than life, SECT represents the future of American talent. Now, with the world of dance music teetering on the edge of change, SECT stands strong, united by a common goal to bring the torch back home.

Thunderdome XIX with Ivan Smagghe & Soul Clap, 6.24.10

Thunderdome- the infamous Boston dance party that’s somehow managed to avoid the nightclubs for over three years now in favor of unconventional and “off-the-beaten-path” local venues- is back once again in its 19th incarnation. Recently relocated to the gorgeous, extremely spacious Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston’s South End, we’re hosting our biggest guest to date and one of our favorite DJs of all time- Ivan Smagghe.

Smagghe, if you don’t already know, is a resident at the Fabric nightclub in London and at Rex Club in Paris, two of the world’s biggest hotspots for innovative and cutting-edge electronic music. You may also know him as one half of the seminal electroclash duo Black Strobe, who helped redefine the genre completely by incorporating industrial and post punk sounds into their house-driven aesthetic. Now, Smagghe spins dark, electro-tinged techno and will undoubtedly wreck the dancefloor at this month’s Thunderdome.

Ivan Smagghe @ Resonance Festival, Avignon โ€“ Aug 09 by audioFAMILIES

He will be supported by hometown heroes Soul Clap, who have recently been making causing quite a stir in the global techno scene and repping Boston to the fullest. Thunderdome XIX will be one of their only Boston appearances this summer before they temporarily relocate to Berlin, aka Techno Mecca, where they will undoubtedly be hailed as heroes. It’ll be a joyous occasion for Boston’s summer dance party scene which is feeling the loss of Soul Clap’s legendary “Dancing on the Charles” due to venue issues.

SECT - Thieve $krilla, Hi-Fi All Around, SECTsy, Searching For Santos, Man Of Wisdom by Soul Clap

Resident DJ, Thunderome mastermind, and co-founder of the Together Electronic Music Festival, Mistaker, will be warming the party up right before our special guests take the stage. Visuals will be provided by Boston’s finest, Robot Kid, Matt Boch, and Sean.

Thunderdome is presented by Boston-based event-production group At Risk Youth, and tickets are available for only $15 if you RSVP to www.weareatriskyouth.com. Presale tickets are available through Brown Paper Ticketing you can find them here This will be a party for the ages, and our biggest Thunderdome to date!

This is at the Villa Victoria, in south boston.ย

Midweek Techno Presents HEIDI vs. Justin Martin, Tonight 6.9.10

HEIDI always comes to visit the Phoenix at least once a year for Midweektechno, and Eli of Soul Clap always celebrates his birthday at least once a year there as well. It just so happens these events intersect this time around, so why not throw Dirtybird’s Justin Martin into the picture as well? Should be a good party, get there early! Doors open at 9pm and goes to 1am. I think the $10 pre-sales are sold out by the way.

New Years Eve 2010: Dance Music Event Guide For Downtown Boston

All right folks, this coming Thursday is going to be a busy one! For those who like dance or electronic music, there’s going to be a ton of options for the night. I’ve been planning on doing a post covering the events for awhile but knowing there would be so many I didn’t want it to be overkill, as I’m sure your Facebook and Myspace inboxes are rammed with e-flyers for a lot of these as well.

The way I’m going to do this is I am going to post a small section of the flyer of each party formatted to fit the layout of BBD, and then under it will be some very brief info about the event. From there, it will be linked to the Facebook event which you can access if you want to get additional info. Also, if you need to purchase an advance ticket, I included links for where you can do that also.

I’ll be at New Years Rezolution and most likely Rise for afterhours, so see you guys there. Party safe, yo! And promoters- if there is anything I missed (which I’m sure there will be) do not hesitate to contact me.

PS: The Throwed/Paper party at Rise is the ONLY 18+ event that I am aware of, and their afterhours is the only spot you can get your groove on after 2am! Also, New Years Rezolution is the only one (again, to my knowledge) that will be focusing on the broken beat (dubstep, drum & bass, and breaks).

Midweek Techno Presents Davide Squillace, Phoenix Landing, 12.9.09

Tonight at the Phoenix Landing! This is Davide’s debut performance in Boston. Sergio Santos will also be performing the dual duty of opening along with celebrating his 30th birthday. Davide’s bio:

Davide Squillace is not available for comment. He’s got to catch a flight; he’s rushing to the studio; the stage manager is frantically hurrying him into the booth; he’s meeting to discuss plans for his labels…or any of the other myriad reasons why Davide feels like he hasn’t slept, eaten or stopped running for what seems like his whole life.

Born in Siena, raised in Naples, it took a trip to London for Davide to finally discover electronic music. Wooed by the mood and sound of the British scene, he returned to Naples flush with energy, excitement and a knowing that this new calling would consume him.

Davide Squillace immersed himself in this world in every conceivable way. In 1999 he began studying at the Naples’ school of sound engineering, tinkering with his first productions, promoting techno events, and finally performing. His first releases on Primate Records, Design Music and Conform were a cadence of his arrival and showcased the young artist’s steadfast style.

Having honed his craft at home, in 2004 Davide left Naples for Barcelona unwavering in his resolve. Now, while touring around the continent, he began to release in earnest what would become a massive body of work, and at a dizzying pace. His productions have graced the catalogs of some of the finest labels including Ovum, Shake, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Tuning Spork, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Sci+Tec, Rillis; the list goes on… Which is not even to speak of his curating and releasing on his own labels – Sketch, Minisketch, Vir, 500, Titbit and most recently the bold Hideout Records.

In addition to his genre-defining works, Davide continues to inspire and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Whether it be at Circoloco, where he has been a resident since 2007, Womb, Berghain, D.Edge, or any other marquee venue, Davide plays with an unequalled funk and excitement. His signature sets, revered by the masses and peers alike, do a double duty in guarding our much-loved traditions while constantly pushing them forward.

The realm of possibilities for one of electronic music’s leading lights is endless. Unfortunately, the minutes in the day are not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what you love and make no compromises.

Mark Farina @ the Phoenix Landing, House & Mushroom Jazz, 11.22.09

Mark Farina makes his return to Boston! Anyone who is reading this clearly knows what he has accomplished over the years, stemming from the strength of his many self-released mixtapes from the early-mid 1990s which put his name on the map and have now obtained legendary status. Easily one of the best domestic house DJ’s we have. His versatility behind a pair of tables has shined since the beginning, easily adapting to any environment due to his vast record collection spanning from everything to deep house, funk, trip hop, rare groove, jazz, funky/jackin’ house, and “peak hour” bits to top it all off.

The first hour of his set tonight will consist of his signature “mushroom jazz” style. Expect to hear some nice hip hop and downtempo music here- so get there early! From there he can go in pretty much any direction; the 3 times I’ve heard him play it’s been pretty much a different set each time. I like the lack of predictability!

Midweek Techno @ Phoenix Landing: September & October lineup!

So I have to shed a silent tear now that Dancing on the Charles is almost over (and I wasn’t even able to make it to 2 or 3 of them!) but there’s really no need to fret, the Midweektechno and Soul Clap gang are taking things indoors. Same town, just a different day of the week. But check out the great lineup! Legendary Fabric resident Lee Burridge is sure to school us with his 25+ years of professional DJ experience on October 7th, we have returning appearances from local producers Paco Osuna and Tanner Ross (I need to review both of these cats’ work in my backyard section, amazing local talent!), and Sascha Dive making a special appearance from Germany. And definitely check out Bassic resident C-Dubs as well, great local dubstep dj who just finished a mix I reviewed just this past weekend here.

I’ve really been meaning to come out to a couple of the Midweektechno parties myself to hang out/shoot pics/etc, so I’ll definitely be at several of these myself.

August 26 :: Eric Cloutier

September 2 :: Till Von Sein

September 9 :: Bruno Pronsato

September 16 :: Tanner Ross & C-Dubs

September 23 :: Pat Fontes & Aby(K)

September 30 :: Dilo

October 7 :: Lee Burridge

October 14 :: Sascha Dive

October 21 :: Soul Clap

Dancing on the Charles Part III this Saturday, 7.25.09- DJ Harvey!

DOTC's third installment this Saturday- you know the drill. Scenic city view, booze, great music, unmatchable atmosphere/vibe. Added to the mix for this installment is legendary UK disco house DJ Harvey who is touching down in New England for the first time (in his 20+ year career!) Harvey's early days involved drumming in a punk band as well as running in a hip hop/graffiti crew, not adding DJ-ing to his versatile background until later on when he began hosting his own house and disco residency in the UK and becoming well known for his sets that would stretch on for 6+ hours at times! Holding the distinction of being the first British DJ to play the Ministry of Sound, Harvey continues to expand his knowledge of house/disco to this day and has a song selection capability that is unmatched. Although he is far more known as a DJ than a producer, he continues to release some production as well as remix/re-edit work on labels such as Nuphonic and King Biscuit. You're going to be in for a treat.

The video below couldn't be better proof of how the song DJ plays supersedes the medium: the dude is mixing on a reel-to-reel deck! Bad sound quality on the video but cool to watch regardless. Below that is one of his tracks from '98 on Black Cock- these releases used to be very highly sought after, but it looks like they have recently been repressed, allowing a newer generation of DJ's to get in on the action.
