Dirtybird Artists Justin Martin & Tanner Ross Play Splash Boston, 11.18.11

There’s a good chance you know Justin Martin. He is probably the number-two man at Dirtybird, right behind founder Claude Von Stroke. Martin’s musical versatility is off the chart right now, infusing sounds from multiple genres (as well as decades) into his original production. He’s also become particularly talented as a DJ, also juggling different genres, tempos, timbres, and time periods under the guise of a single mix. This must explain why he earned the highly coveted position of being asked to record an Essential Mix by Pete Tong back in 2010.

Martin plays tonight at Splash nightclub (150 Kneeland St, Boston).

But wait there’s more. Dirtybird artist Tanner Ross is also playing. He might live in Boston, but shook the “local” status years ago with releases on Dirtybird and Freerange, as well as his seminal Voodeux project and the now-famous Boston duo Soul Clap. Tanner brings a lifetime of traditional music training into his work, and similar to Martin, can juggle multiple sounds or styles with ease. Tanner Ross does not play often in Boston as he’s constantly traveling and playing gigs throughout the country, but tonight you get a chance to see him do his thing.

Marz Presents John Tejada @ Good Life & Rise Afterhourse, Tonight 12.11.09

This is Tejada’s third performance in Boston this year; trust me, having seen the first two, you don’t want to miss this if you’re a fan of house music!

JOHN TEJADA palette recordings LA

Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

VINCENZO terdrop, dessous, poker flat, Berlin
Vincenzo’s serious interest in music began as a teenager, listening to Hip Hop and other styles of black music. Later, in the late 80’s, when Acid House reached the europe, he was infected by the sound and energy of this new type of club music. He started out his dj career playing at small clubs and private parties and soon Vincenzo found himself involved in the Hamburg club scene. Transcending both House and Techno genres, Vincenzo has became a household name.

Midweek Techno @ Phoenix Landing: September & October lineup!

So I have to shed a silent tear now that Dancing on the Charles is almost over (and I wasn’t even able to make it to 2 or 3 of them!) but there’s really no need to fret, the Midweektechno and Soul Clap gang are taking things indoors. Same town, just a different day of the week. But check out the great lineup! Legendary Fabric resident Lee Burridge is sure to school us with his 25+ years of professional DJ experience on October 7th, we have returning appearances from local producers Paco Osuna and Tanner Ross (I need to review both of these cats’ work in my backyard section, amazing local talent!), and Sascha Dive making a special appearance from Germany. And definitely check out Bassic resident C-Dubs as well, great local dubstep dj who just finished a mix I reviewed just this past weekend here.

I’ve really been meaning to come out to a couple of the Midweektechno parties myself to hang out/shoot pics/etc, so I’ll definitely be at several of these myself.

Dirtybird/Claude Von Stroke, Tanner Ross & Soul Clap crew @ Rise, 6.26.09!

This is going to be an awesome event. I think most of you know who Claude VonStroke is by now, but in case you need a refresher, this guy is probably the most prolific house/tech house producer in the United States right now. He's the man behind Dirtybird Recordings, which is responsible for having a very distinct tech-funk-house sound. Dirtybird has only been in existence since 2005 and has already become a buy-on-sight label for many fans and dj's, something that can easily take 10+ years for many record labels to accomplish. Claude VonStroke's two most well known songs are probably The Whistler and Who's Afraid of Detroit, which are embedded in the videos below. (The Whistler video below is actually a video of him playing live in Boston 3 years ago!) He just released a Fabric Live mix cd; a testament to his success as a producer. And Dirtybird labelmate Tanner Ross is also playing, he's one of Boston's biggest producers at the moment! Check out his Airdrop podcast from a few months ago here. Also on tap in the lounge are Jay Prouty, Booster, Brent G, and Wheels/D-Lux. Going to be a great night for sure, check out the Rise site for more details! Respect to Soul Clap and Rise for making this happen.

Bassic presents Appleblim @ Goodlife, 5.27.09

Following Bassic's tradition of hosting quality dubstep artists to showcase their forthcoming music in Boston once a month, their next installment is going to feature one of the most distinct producers within that genre of music: Appleblim. His sound can be characterized as a combination of minimal techno, deep house, and dubstep, each evenly balanced in regards to samples, composition, and overall feeling. The sound is definitely very moody and although not overly complex, is still loaded with tons of subtleties. Appleblim founded the successful Skull Disco record label, and has since gone on to produce a variety of songs with label mate Peverelist, give guest speeches at Red Bull's Music Academy, and release mix CD's.

Appleblim's newest record label, Apple Pips, is very interesting as it is geared almost entirely towards minimal techno as opposed to dubstep, and has showcased the work of established producers within that discipline, including T++ and Brandon Moeller. It is definitely interesting seeing artists from outside dubstep being brought in to collaborate with these guys, hopefully this will help expose dubstep DJ's and fans to talent outside of the genre as well as vice versa.

Dubwar hosted Appleblim this past weekend and from what I heard it was quite a show! If you're a dubstep or techno fan then do not miss the Boston installment next week.

Check out a few of Appleblim's tracks via Amazon's shop below, on his imprint Skull Disco.

Boston's own Tanner Ross will be opening! Tanner has been spinning tech house around the area for years and has come into his own as a respected producer over the course of the past few years, releasing tracks on Airdrop and Dirtybird. He even had a remix of Claude Von Stroke's classic "Who's Afraid of Detroit" released on his imprint! My personal favorite from him was his EP on very popular UK imprint Freerange from last year. Check out one of his mixes from 2008 here:

1. Audion - Freds Bells
2. Alex Smoke - Rotwag
3. Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts - Mederico
4. Trentemoller - Kink
5. Martin Buttrich - Hunted
6. 3 Channels - Getting Kinda Hectic
7. Shlomi Aber - Sekur
8. Roman Flugel presents Soylent Green - La Forza Del Destino (Radio Slave Remix)
9. Marshall Jefferson & Nooseheads - Mushrooms (Justin Martin Mix)
10. Lusine - The Stop (Robag Wruhme Remix)
11. Samuel L Session - Smoke Stack
12. Todd Bodine - The Secret Edge
13. Voodeux - The Curse

Bassic resident and co-founder C-Dubs also warming things up so be sure to get there early!

Soul Clap presents Snakes on a Rave @ Rattlesnake, 4.11.09

This looks like it will be a good jam! The rattlesnake is a nice venue, I've only been there once but the food there is excellent and the atmosphere inside reminds me of Goodlife; it's similar in size and function. I still haven't seen the movie the title of this party is based off of but I have to admit, the spoofs of it never get old haha. This is a joint effort by the Airdrop and the Soul Clap crews, so it goes without saying that quality house and techno will be played the entire night.
