On The Boogiedownload: Mix 051 by Phil Dumka (House/Bass)

This week’s BBD podcast mix comes to us from local DJ Phil Dumka. I’ve known Phil for around a year through the volunteer work he has done for the Together festival. Serving as a production coordinator, I can safely assure you this dude spent a lot of time running around behind the scenes while the festival was happening, making sure everyone was smelling fresh each time shit hit the fan.
Dumka’s responsibilities for this past year’s festival even involved trying to accommodate the notoriously difficult-to-accommodate Zomby. One photo was taken of his noble attempt to provide the boorish headliner with his requested champagne and RCA cables even turned into a meme that went viral locally. But Dumka’s efforts were rewarded with a shot at opening for Four Tet during the festival, along with more widespread recognition of his skill set as a budding DJ and producer.

Dumka’s mix provided here jumps between different strains of house and future bass, sandwiched between throwback slices of 70’s funk by Kool & the Gang and some Baltimore club by Rod Lee. Vocals serve as the focal point behind the majority of these tracks, ensuring their appeal to a wide array of listeners. The heavy UK influence is omnipresent, most notably in the ubiquitous anthems by Duke Dumont, Disclosure, and Dusky. There are also plenty of lesser-known tracks, including Kathy Brown’s long-forgotten “I Appreciate” from 1995, and the drum-heavy polyrhythms of Champion and Ruby Lee Ryder’s “Sensitivity”, a sleeper from 2011.
